The story · English

Narada was pleased and spoke with Shankara in mind. He said to Brahma: you have told a wonderful play of the moon-crowned Lord. Madana has taken a wife and gone home glad. Daksha has gone to his house. Your mind-born sons have gone to their own dwellings. Where did Sandhya go, your daughter, born of your mind, who was herself the mother of the evening? What did she do, and whom did she marry? Tell her whole story. Brahma remembered Shankara with devotion and answered. Listen, Narada, to the story of Sandhya. Hearing it, women become faithful and fulfilled. She was my daughter, and she gave up her body after a penance. She was born again as Arundhati, daughter of the sage Medhatithi, and by the word of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha she chose the great Vasishtha as her husband.

Narada asked how she had done this. Why did she do penance, where, and how did she leave her body and become Medhatithi's daughter? How did the three gods bring Vasishtha to her? Tell it truly, grandfather. Brahma answered with no softening. Seeing my own daughter Sandhya, I had turned my mind to desire, and the fear of Shiva made me drop it. Her mind too had been shaken by Kama's arrows, and so had the minds of the sages. Shiva had laughed at me. After I cursed Madana, and after I vanished and Shiva went to his own place, Sandhya was seized with bitterness. She sat in meditation and thought over what had happened. She was deeply grieved, and she weighed it all.

Sandhya said to herself: as soon as I was born, my father saw me a young woman and was moved by desire. Before the eyes of the sages, my brothers, his mind turned lawless. My own mind was stirred by the wicked Madana, shaken when I looked at those sages. Madana has already had the fruit of his sin, for Brahma cursed him in Shiva's presence. I will take the fruit of mine. I do not want to live with the body in which my father and brothers desired me, and in which I desired them. I will make atonement and offer myself in the fire, as the Vedas teach. But first I will set one limit on this earth, so that no living creature is stirred by desire at birth. For this I will do a terrible penance, and afterwards give up my life. She went to the great mountain Chandrabhaga, where the river Chandrabhaga rises.

Brahma saw that she had gone there. He called Vasishtha, his son, self-controlled and learned in the Vedas, who was seated near him. Go, my son, he said, to Sandhya, who is set on penance. Initiate her as the rule requires. She was dazed when she saw you, me and herself, all moved by desire. She means to give up her life and set a limit among those who have none. She does not know how to do penance. Teach her so that she gains what she wants. Put off this form and take another near her, showing her the practice, so that she does not feel what she felt on first seeing you. Vasishtha agreed and went. There he saw a lake as full of virtue as Manasa. Sandhya stood on its bank, and the lake shone with lotuses like the evening sky with rising moon and stars.

Vasishtha looked at the lake called Brihallohita. He saw the river Chandrabhaga flow from it to the southern sea, as Ganga flows from the Himalaya. Seeing Sandhya on its bank, he asked her with respect: why have you come, gentle one, to this lonely mountain? Whose daughter are you? What do you wish to do? Tell me if it is no secret. Your face is bright as the full moon, yet it is still. She bowed to him, who blazed like fire and wore matted hair. She said: I am Brahma's daughter, called Sandhya. I have come to do penance. Teach me if you think it right. I do not know the way of penance, and I am wasting away with worry, my mind trembling. Vasishtha, who knew all that was needed, asked nothing more. He remembered Shankara, who loves his devotees.

Vasishtha said: fix Shiva in your mind. He is the highest light, the highest austerity, the one cause of duty, wealth, desire and liberation. Worship him with this mantra: Om namah Shankaraya, Om. Now hear the start of the silent penance. Bathe in silence and worship Hara in silence. For the first two sixth-meal times take only a full draught of water. At the third sixth-meal time, fast. When the penance is done, the rite follows at the sixth time. This is the silent penance. It gives the fruit of chastity and grants every wish. Keep your wish in mind and think of Shankara. Pleased, he will soon give you what you want. Having taught her the rite, Vasishtha spoke to her fittingly and vanished from that place. He went home. Sandhya knew the way of penance and was glad.

Dressed for it, she began her penance on the bank of Brihallohita. As Vasishtha had said, she worshipped Shankara with the mantra and true devotion. She was single-minded, her mind set on Shambhu, and one whole cycle of four ages went by. Shambhu was pleased. He showed himself within, without and in the sky, in the form she had meditated on, and stood before her. Seeing him calm and smiling, she was overjoyed. Then she grew afraid: what shall I say, how shall I praise Hara? Thinking this, she closed her eyes. Hara entered her heart and gave her divine knowledge, speech and two divine eyes. Seeing the Lord of the world before her, she praised him. You are beyond form, she said, known only by knowledge, neither gross nor subtle. Yogis see you within. I bow to you, maker of the worlds.

She went on: sky, earth, directions, water, fire and time are your forms. Brahma makes, Vishnu keeps, and Rudra will destroy; to you I bow. Your beginning, middle and end do not exist. How shall I praise one beyond speech and mind? Brahma and the sages cannot describe your forms. What can I, a woman, know of the qualities of the one without qualities? Be gracious, Shambhu. Shankara heard, and was kinder still. He saw her body in bark and deerskin, her matted hair, her face like a lotus struck by frost. Moved, he said: I am pleased with your penance and your praise. Ask a boon. Bowing again and again, she said: if I am pure of that sin and deserve a boon, let this be the first. Let no creature feel desire at birth. Let desire come only later. Let no woman be like me. Let my husband be my close friend. A man who looks at me with desire will lose his manhood.

Shankara said: your sin is burned to ash and my anger is gone. Everything you asked is given. A creature has four stages: infancy, childhood, youth, old age. At the third, desire may come, or at the end of the second, here and there. By your penance I have set the limit. You will be a wife unmatched in the three worlds. Whoever looks at you with desire, except your husband, will at once be weak. Your husband will live to the end of seven kalpas with you. Now hear of your promise to give your body to fire. Medhatithi performs a twelve-year sacrifice by the river Chandrabhaga. Go unseen into its fire, keep your chosen husband in mind, and be born his daughter. She went. Fire consumed her body, and Surya placed it in his chariot, for the dawn and the evening. Medhatithi found a girl in the flames, bright as gold, and named her Arundhati. At five she was married to Vasishtha, in the presence of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara. Seven rivers began from the water poured by their hands. Her sons were Shakti and the rest. Whoever hears this, man or woman, gains every wish.
