Kama Fails to Move Shiva

The story · English

Suta tells how Narada, pleased by what Brahma had said, spoke to him. He praised Brahma as a devotee of Shiva who shows the highest truth, and thanked him for the sacred tale of Arundhati in her former life. Then he asked: tell me now the pure and sin-destroying story of Shiva. When Kama had taken a wife and the sages had gone, and Sandhya went off to practise austerities, what happened next? Brahma, glad at the question, began. He confessed that when Shiva had vanished long ago, he had brooded on Shiva's words, which stung like poison. Bewildered by Shiva's own maya, he had even felt envy toward Shiva. Then he went to where Daksha and the others sat, saw Kama with Rati, and felt a stir of desire.

Brahma spoke to Daksha and his sons, Marichi and the rest. He said that Shiva, seeing in him a mere wish for a wife, had scolded him, and had rebuked all of them many times. Brahma said he found no peace. A way must be found for Shiva to take a wife; then he would be happy again. But he doubted it. What woman in the three worlds could hold the mind of such a yogi? Even Kama might fail, for Shiva could not bear even the name of women, and Kama's arrows had never touched him. Still, he said, creation would be left half made if Shiva stayed apart. Then he turned to Kama and Rati, and spoke gladly.

Brahma told Kama he was his son, a giver of joy. Beside Rati he shone, as Vishnu shines beside Lakshmi, as the night shines with the moon. For the good of the world, he said, go and bewilder Shiva, the bearer of the Pinaka bow, so that he takes a wife. Follow him with Rati through lonely hills and by lakes. Only you can do this, and when Shiva is moved, the curse on you will end. Kama agreed, but asked for a wife made as a weapon, one who could in turn hold Shiva's heart. Brahma sank into thought. From his anxious sigh Spring was born, hung with flowers, with eyes like open lotuses and a walk like a maddened elephant.

At Spring's birth a sweet wind blew, the trees flowered, cuckoos sang in the fifth note, and lakes filled with open lotuses. Brahma said to Kama: this one is your friend, as wind is a friend to fire, and will follow you always. He named him Vasanta. The Malaya breeze, the playful gestures, the sixty-four arts, would all serve Rati and Kama. Brahma added that he would see to it that a woman be made who could move Shiva. Kama, glad, bowed to Brahma with his wife, bowed to Daksha and the mind-born sons, and set out for the place where Shiva sat. Brahma told Narada what followed. Kama spread his power, and living creatures all fell under it. Spring made every tree bloom at once.

Yet Shiva with his hosts was not stirred. Kama came back to Brahma, drained of pride, and said in a shaking voice that Shiva could not be moved. He told of his efforts. When Shiva sat in samadhi, Kama fanned him with cool scented wind. He circled him with his five arrows and bow. Wherever Shiva went, to Himavat, Meru, Kailasa, Kama followed with Rati and Spring. When Shiva rose from meditation, he made a wheel of beauty before him, and Rati's brows spoke in gesture. Deer and birds acted out desire; peacocks danced as lovers. Spring opened champaka, kesara, punnaga, jasmine and more. Even sages would have fallen. But Shiva showed no change, and no anger either. Kama said that when Shiva opens his eyes, blazing like fire, with matted locks, no one can stand before him.

Brahma, hearing this, wanted to speak but could not, and sighed deeply. From that sigh came fierce beings with lolling tongues, who beat many drums and cried, kill, cut down. Kama asked Brahma who these terrible ones were, what they would do, where they would live. Brahma answered that because they were born crying kill, they would be called Mara. They would obstruct people who pursue desire and neglect worship of Shiva. They would follow Kama wherever he went, confuse the minds of those under his arrows, and hinder the path of knowledge. Kama's face brightened a little, and the Maras surrounded him. Brahma told him to go again with them and with Spring, and to try for Shiva's marriage.

Kama bowed and answered honestly. He had done his work well, he said, and Shiva was not moved, and would not be. Out of respect for Brahma he would go again, with Rati, at his command. But his mind was made up that it would fail, and he feared Shiva would burn his body to ash. So Kama went with Rati, Spring and the Maras, afraid, to Shiva's place. He used all his power as before, and Spring used every skill, and the Maras did their part. Not a trace of desire rose in Shiva, the supreme Self. Kama returned to Brahma without pride, as did the Maras and Brahma himself, joyless. Kama said they had done more than before and Shiva was unmoved; he was merciful and had not burned him. If Brahma wished Shiva to marry, he must find another way. Then Kama went home with his people, remembering Shiva.
