The story · English

Narada asked Brahma what he did after Vishnu left. Brahma told him to listen closely. He began to praise the Goddess Durga, beloved of Shambhu, who is both knowledge and ignorance, the mother of the three gods, present everywhere. He said, "You are pure awareness and supreme joy. Be gracious, Goddess of gods, and do my work. I bow to you." Praised this way, she appeared before him as Chandika. She sat on a lion, with four arms, a dark and gentle radiance, a crescent of moon on her brow and three eyes. Her face was like the autumn moon. Brahma saw Uma, the power of Shiva, bowed low, and began his hymn.

In his hymn Brahma said, "I bow to you who are the movement of the world and its rest, its upholding and its making. You are the lasting power of all that moves and does not move, and you bewilder everyone. You are Shri, who stays with Keshava. You carry the whole world. Long ago you made the three worlds, and you will draw them back. You are beyond the three qualities, sattva, rajas and tamas, and free of change. You make, you consume, you protect. Seed of all worlds, you are knower and known. For the good of the world, wife of Shiva, I bow to you." Hearing this, the Goddess, called Kali, spoke warmly. "Brahma, why have you praised me? Say it quickly. Once I have appeared, the work is sure to be done."

Brahma answered, "Goddess, be kind and hear what is in my heart. Your husband Shiva was born from my forehead long ago, known as Rudra. He lives on Kailasa, practising austerities, alone, without a wife, and he wants no second. Bewilder him, so that he looks on another woman. Only you can charm him. Be born as Daksha's daughter and become Rudra's wife, as you delight Keshava in the form of Lakshmi. I worry. Shiva scorned even my passing desire for a wife. If he takes no wife, how will creation go well? Neither Vishnu, nor Lakshmi, nor Kama, nor I can do this, only you. Daksha is now practising austerity on the north shore of the milk ocean, with his mind fixed on you."

Hearing this, Shiva's Goddess fell into thought and said within herself, "How strange. Brahma, who teaches the Vedas, is bewildered. He wants to enchant the one who is beyond change. Shambhu is the supreme Brahman, and I am always his servant. He took the form of Rudra to rescue his devotees. He is master of Vishnu and Brahma, and lesser than no one. Brahma thinks him merely his own son. Yet if I refuse the boon, the rule of the Vedas is broken. What shall I do so that Maheshvara is not angry?" She called Shiva to mind and received his leave. Then Durga said, "Brahma, all you said is true. No one but me can bewilder Shankara, and without a wife for Hara this creation will not go on."

She continued, "I will try so that Hara himself takes a wife, bewildered by his own will. I will take the form of Sati and become his devoted wife, as Lakshmi is to Vishnu. By his own grace I will make him ruled by me, as any creature is ruled by a wife. Born to Daksha's wife as Sati, I will win Shankara playfully." Having spoken, the Goddess vanished while Brahma watched. He went to his sons and told them everything. Then Narada asked how Daksha's austerity ended. Brahma said Daksha, told by him, fixed his mind on the Goddess on the north shore of the milk ocean. For three thousand divine years he lived on wind, then water, then leaves, until the Goddess appeared.

Daksha saw her seated on a lion: dark, four-armed, red-eyed, loose-haired, with a boon-giving hand, a sword and a blue lotus. He thought his life fulfilled and praised her. She answered, "I am very pleased with your devotion, Daksha. Choose a boon." He said, "If you grant me a boon, then Shiva, called Rudra, has been born as a full form of the Supreme, but you have not been born, so who is his wife? Be born as my daughter and charm him." She smiled and said, "I will be your daughter, no doubt. I will perform hard austerity and win Hara as husband. I am his servant in every birth. Go home." She added one condition, "If you ever show me too little respect, I will leave my body." Then she vanished, and Daksha went home glad.

Daksha made many beings by thought, but they did not grow. Brahma told him to marry Asikni, daughter of Panchajana, and bring forth children by union. Daksha married her and had ten thousand sons, the Haryashvas, devoted to their father and the Vedic path. Sent to create beings, they went west to Narayana lake, where the river meets the sea. Touching its water cleansed them, and they began austerities. Narada went to them and asked, "How can you make creation without seeing the earth's end?" Thinking it over, they said that a person who ignores such counsel cannot create. They bowed, walked around him, and took the path that does not return. Daksha, hearing of his sons' loss from Narada, mourned again and again, bewildered by Shiva's illusion.

Brahma comforted Daksha, and Daksha fathered a thousand more sons, the Shabalashvas. They too went to the same lake and practised austerity, and Narada again spoke to them. They followed their brothers on the path that does not return. Daksha saw many bad omens and grew grieved and bewildered. Hearing what Narada had done, he fainted from sorrow, then raged. He found Narada, struck him, and cried, "Shame on you. You showed my children the path of a beggar before they had paid their three debts. A man who leaves home without paying them falls. You wander to no purpose among Hari's attendants. May you wander always and never have a fixed place in any world." Narada, calm in mind, accepted the curse. Brahma said that only he can bear this.
