The story · English

Brahma is speaking to Narada. He tells how he came to Daksha at that time, having learned quickly what had happened, and comforted him as he had before. He spoke kindly, and it pleased Narada too. Then Brahma took Narada, his own son, dear to the gods, and went back to his own abode. Soothed by Brahma, the Prajapati Daksha had sixty lovely daughters with his wife. He married them off without tiring. Ten he gave to Dharma, thirteen to the sage Kashyapa, and twenty-seven to the Moon. Two each went to Bhuta, Angiras and Krisasva, and the last daughter to Tarkshya. Their children filled the three worlds. Brahma will not list them all, for it would run too long.

Brahma then speaks of the daughter this story is about. Some say she was the eldest, others the middle one, and some the last of all. The ages of the world differ, he says, and all three can be true. After his daughters were born, Daksha and his wife held the Mother of the World in their minds with great love. Daksha praised her in a voice thick with feeling, bowing again and again with joined hands. The Goddess was pleased. She decided to be born to Virini, so that her own promise would be fulfilled. She came to live in Daksha's mind, and he glowed with it. At an auspicious hour he placed the child in his wife, and Shiva's Goddess dwelt in her womb with compassion.

Virini showed every sign of pregnancy. She shone, glad at heart, and the Goddess within her made her a form of great blessing. Daksha, in joy, performed the rites for his family's prosperity, including the Pumsavana, and gave wealth to the brahmins as they wished. Vishnu and the other gods learned that the Goddess was in Virini's womb and came gladly. They bowed again and again and praised her as the Mother of the World, who works for the good of all. Then they praised Daksha and Virini and went home. Nine months passed. In the tenth, at an auspicious hour when moon, planets and stars were favourable, Shiva's Goddess appeared before her mother. Flowers rained down, clouds gave water, the quarters grew calm, the gods played music in the sky, and the fires burned steady.

Seeing her blazing with light, Daksha knew her for the Goddess herself. He joined his hands and praised her: "Great Goddess, Mother of the World, eternal one, be kind to us. The wise call you Shiva, Peace, Mahamaya, the sleep of yoga. By you Brahma was set to create, Vishnu to preserve, and Rudra to destroy. You are the mother of the three gods. Whoever remembers you has both enjoyment and freedom in his hand." She answered so that her mother could not hear: "Daksha, I was worshipped by you before, for a child. Your wish is granted. Now keep up your austerities." Then, by her own power, she took on the form of a baby and cried beside her mother.

Hearing the crying, the women and servants came hurrying. They saw the girl and were glad, and the townspeople cheered. There was a great festival with song and music. Daksha rejoiced at her lovely face, performed the rites as the scriptures say, and gave wealth to brahmins and others. Vishnu and the gods came with their followers and sages, bowed, praised her, and honoured Daksha and Virini. Daksha named her Uma, as she herself had instructed. Other names came later, all bringing blessing and ending sorrow. Daksha bowed to Vishnu, to Brahma, the gods and the sages, and honoured them. Then they went home, remembering Shiva with his Goddess. Her mother fed her, and she grew like the waxing moon. As a child she drew pictures of Shiva, sang of him, and pleased her parents each day.
