Brahma tells Narada what happened one day in Daksha's house. Sati was standing beside her father, and the two of us saw her there. Her father had just honored you and me, so Sati bowed to us with joy and devotion, following the ways of the world even though she was far above it. When she finished, Daksha gave us a good seat and we sat down. I spoke to the humble girl. 'Get as your husband the god who desires you alone, the one you desire, the all-knowing lord of the world. He has never taken another wife, and never will. May he be your husband, unlike any other.' We stayed a while, then Daksha let us go. Daksha was relieved when he heard it, and he took his daughter to be the supreme goddess herself. She grew past childhood, and her beauty bloomed. Daksha wondered how he could give her to Bhava. Sati herself longed only for Shiva, and she asked her mother's leave to practice austerities.
With her mother's permission Sati began to worship Shiva at home, firm in her vow. This was the Nanda vow, kept through the whole year. In the month of Asvina, on the Nanda day, she honored Hara with sweet rice and salted offerings, and so passed the day. On the fourteenth of Karttika she worshiped him with cakes and milk rice and kept him in her thoughts. In Margasirsha, on the dark eighth, she offered sesame and barley rice and spent the days in worship. In Pausha, on the bright seventh, she kept vigil through the night and at dawn honored Shiva with a meal of rice and sesame. In Magha, on the full moon, she kept vigil again. She stood in wet clothes on a riverbank and worshiped him there.
In Tapas, on the dark night, she kept vigil and worshiped through every watch. In Caitra, on the bright fourteenth, she honored Shiva day and night with palasa flowers and fragrant leaves. In Radha, on the bright third, she worshiped Rudra with sesame and barley rice and passed the month that way. In Jyeshtha, on the full moon, she worshiped through the night with cloth and brihati flowers and ate nothing. In Ashadha, in dark clothes, she offered brihati flowers. In Sravana she offered sacred threads and cloth, and in Bhadra, on the thirteenth, flowers and fruits, then took only water on the fourteenth. So she worshiped in every month and on every day, steady in the vow. When the Nanda vow was complete, she meditated on Shiva with love and was utterly still, her mind on no other. Then the gods and sages came with Vishnu and me to see Sati's austerity.
They saw her as if she were success itself in bodily form, sunk deep in meditation on Shiva and fixed in perfection. The gods bowed with folded hands, and the sages bowed with lowered shoulders, Vishnu and the rest glad at heart. They praised her austerity with wonder, bowed to the goddess again, and went straight to Kailasa, the mountain Shiva loves. I went with Savitri, and Vishnu came with Lakshmi, and we reached Hara. We saw the lord, bowed low, and in great agitation praised him with folded hands. The gods said: 'Honor to you, lord, from whom this world of moving and unmoving things comes. You are the first seed of all, pure awareness, beyond change. The gods, sages and perfected beings do not know your place. How could any lesser being know it? Though birth and change do not touch you, you take them on out of compassion.'
The gods went on: 'Honor to you, beyond words, without form and of many forms, endless in power, witness of all. Honor to you, three-eyed, who free those who come to you for shelter and grant release. You cannot be won by clever ones, yet you live always in the hearts of the wise. Devotees ask nothing of you but sing your wondrous deeds. You are not god, demon or human, not woman, man or neither. You create the world, guard it and dissolve it. Honor to you, whose power we cannot bear. Through your power even we do not know ourselves.' Having praised Mahadeva, Vishnu and the gods stood silent before him, heads bowed in devotion. Shankara was greatly pleased and laughed. Seeing Brahma and Vishnu there with their wives, he greeted them and asked: 'Tell me why you have come, and fear nothing.'
Brahma tells Narada how he answered, urged on by Vishnu. 'Lord of lords, we have come for your sake above all. Some demons will die by my hand, some by Hari's, some by yours, and some by the son born of your seed. But you are always yoked in yoga, free of love and hatred, and you will not kill. Without that work, creation and keeping cannot go on. We three are one being, divided only by our tasks. Hari was born from the left side of Shiva, I from the right, and you from his heart. Vishnu and I have taken wives for the world's work, so you too should take one fair woman as wife. You once told us you would take a woman and do a great work.' Vishnu added: 'All that Brahma has said, I say too.'
Shiva smiled and answered. 'You are both dear to me. But marriage does not suit one who is solitary and passionless, content in himself. Marriage binds a person to others. Still, I will do it for the world's good, for I am always ruled by my devotees. The woman must be able to bear my power in part. She must be a yogini if I am in yoga, a lover if I am in desire. When I turn to my own contemplation, she must not disturb it. And if she ever doubts my word, I will leave her.' Brahma replied: 'Uma took two forms, Sarasvati and Lakshmi, and the third became Sati, Daksha's daughter. She is practicing hard austerities for you now. Go and grant her a boon.' Vishnu spoke the same, and they both left, glad.
Sati fasted again on the eighth of the bright half of Asvina and worshiped the lord of all. When the Nanda vow was complete, on the ninth day, Shiva appeared before her. He was fair, five-faced and three-eyed, with the moon on his brow, a blue throat, four arms holding a trident and giving freedom from fear, bright with ashes, the Ganges shining on his head. Sati bowed to his feet, her face lowered in shyness. He said: 'Daughter of Daksha, I am pleased with your vow. Ask a boon.' Though he knew her wish, she was too shy to say it. Twice more he urged her, and at last she said: 'Give me the boon I want.' Before she finished, he said: 'Be my wife.' She stood silent and glad. Then she asked him to wed her with her father's consent, and he said: 'So be it.' She went to her mother, and Shiva went to Himavat, aching with longing.
In Himavat Shiva was troubled by separation from Sati. Taking the ways of the world, he thought of me. I arrived at once with Sarasvati. Seeing us, he said: 'Brahma, I was once all for myself. Now I feel that I belong to another. Sati worshiped me, and by the Nanda vow I told her to be my wife. She asked me to receive her through her father, and I agreed. She has gone to her mother's house. Go to Daksha on my order, so that he gives her to me quickly.' He turned to Sarasvati and grew sadder still. I answered: 'Daksha will give you his daughter himself, and I will speak for you.' I drove off to Daksha's house in a swift chariot. Narada asked what Daksha did when Sati came home. She had bowed to her parents and told all through her friend. Her parents rejoiced, gave gifts to brahmins and to the poor, and Virini kissed her head.
Time passed, and Daksha worried: how could he give her to Shiva, who had come once and gone? Suddenly I appeared with Sarasvati. Daksha bowed, gave me a seat and asked why I had come. I said: 'Your daughter's boon has ripened. Shiva has sent me to you. Since he left, he finds no peace without Sati. Kama shot all his flowered arrows at him and could not win, yet he sits grieving like an ordinary man, asking everywhere, Where is Sati. Give her to him without delay. I will bring him to your house with Narada.' Daksha was overjoyed and said: 'So be it.' I went back to where Shiva waited. After I left, Daksha, with his wife and children, was filled with joy, as if brimming with nectar.
