The story · English
Brahma went to Shiva on Mount Himavat, glad to be bringing him the news. Shiva watched the maker of the worlds approach and doubted in his heart, again and again, whether he would ever win Sati. Then, in a worldly way, out of love and for Sati's sake, he spoke to Brahma like an ordinary man. "What did your son Daksha do about Sati? Tell me, so my heart is not torn apart by desire. Separation runs at me and strikes me, for no one else holds my life as she does. Tell me what to do. She must be won, and she is not different from me. Arrange it." Brahma calmed him, saying that what his son had said could be trusted as already done.
Brahma told him what Daksha had said. "I mean to give my daughter to him. My daughter has worshipped Shambhu for this very thing, and he is seeking me too. Let him come at a good hour, on a good day, and I will give her as alms to Shambhu." So Brahma told Shiva to go at the right moment to Daksha's house and bring her home. Shiva laughed, lover of his devotees, and answered in the ways of the world. "I will go with you and with Narada. Call to mind Marichi and your other mind-born sons. With them, and with my attendants, I will go to Daksha's house."
Brahma called to mind Narada, and Marichi and the other sons. They came quickly and gladly at his bare thought. Shiva called Vishnu, and Vishnu came at once, riding Garuda, with Lakshmi and his own army. Then, on the thirteenth day of the bright half of Chaitra, on a Sunday, under the star of Bhaga, Shiva set out with all the gods, led by Brahma and Vishnu, and with the sages. Joy rose along the road, among the gods and among Shiva's happy attendants. An elephant hide, a tiger skin, snakes, matted hair and the crescent moon all became his ornaments, as Shiva wished.
Riding his strong bull, the yogi came in a moment to Daksha's house, with Vishnu at the head of his company. Daksha went out to meet him with his own people, humble, his hair standing on end for joy. He honoured the gods himself and seated the sages in order. He brought Shiva inside, gave him the finest seat, and worshipped him by the rules. Then he honoured Vishnu, Brahma, the brahmins, the gods and the attendants, each rightly and with true devotion. Daksha then said to Brahma, his father, "Bow, and carry out the wedding rites." Brahma answered, "So be it," gladly, and did all that was needed.
At a good hour, with the planets favourable, Daksha gave his daughter Sati to Shambhu in joy. Shiva, glad too, took the hand of Daksha's daughter by the marriage rite. Brahma, Vishnu, the sages, gods and attendants all bowed and praised the Lord. There was a great festival of dancing and singing, and everyone was filled with the highest joy. Daksha felt his task fulfilled, and Shiva and Sati were pleased. Daksha gave a dowry and rich gifts to Shiva, and wealth to the brahmins. Then Vishnu came forward with Lakshmi, hands joined, and said, "Lord of gods, you are father of the worlds and Sati is mother of all. You two take birth in play, for the good of the righteous and the restraining of the wicked. Protect gods and men. If anyone looks on her with desire, strike him down." Shiva smiled and said, "So be it."
Vishnu went back to his place and the feast went on. Brahma performed the fire rite by the household rules, and Shiva and Sati walked around the fire at the priests' word. Then Brahma tells Narada something astonishing. Shambhu's illusion is hard to know, and it deludes the whole world. Brahma had once tried to deceive Shiva by trickery, and now Shiva deceived him in play. As Sati circled the fire, her two feet showed from under her garment. Brahma saw them, and his mind filled with desire. The more he looked at her lovely limbs, the more desire seized him. He longed to see her face, but she was shy, and Shiva was before her.
So Brahma planned a way. He threw quantities of wet wood into the fire and poured a little ghee, and thick dark smoke rose on every side until the altar ground was dark. Shiva, his eyes stung, covered them with his hands. Brahma lifted her veil and looked at Sati's face, over and over, glad and desire-struck. Then his senses failed him. His seed fell on the ground, four drops like a heap of frost. Afraid and silent, he hid it quickly so that no one would notice. But Shiva knew it with his divine eye, and spoke in anger. "What is this shameful thing, sinner? You looked at my bride's face with desire at my wedding. Nothing is hidden from me in the three worlds. I stand in the middle of everything, as oil is in the sesame seed." Remembering Vishnu's request, Shiva raised his trident to kill Brahma.
Marichi and the others cried out in dismay. The gods and sages, trembling, praised blazing Shiva. "Protect Brahma. Shiva, you are father of the world, and Sati is its mother. Your illusion is wondrous, and it confuses everyone who lacks devotion to you." Daksha raised his hand and cried, "No, no," and ran in front of Shiva. Shiva answered, "Vishnu asked that whoever looks on Sati with desire be killed, and I agreed. Brahma looked with desire, and his seed has fallen, so I will kill him." All the people shook with fear. Brahma himself was terrified. Then Vishnu bowed, praised Shiva, and stood before him. "Do not kill Brahma, the maker of the worlds. He has taken refuge in you. If he dies, who will make creatures? It was by this very Brahma that Sati was made your wife."
Shiva said, "Vishnu, dear to my life, do not stop me. This is a wicked sinner. I will make the creatures myself, or from my own light I will make another maker." Vishnu smiled and answered, "Keeping a vow suits one who is another. You are not another here. We three gods are your own selves, one form and not divided. Think on it truly." Shiva asked how Brahma, standing before him, could be himself. Vishnu answered before all, "Brahma is not different from you, nor am I. You know everything, and you only wish me to say it aloud. The three of us are parts of the one luminous Lord, causes of making, keeping and ending. As head, neck and limbs belong to one body, so we are your limbs." Hearing this, Shiva grew calm and did not kill Brahma.
The fear passed and everyone bowed and cheered. Shiva said to Brahma, "Touch your head with your hand." As Brahma touched it, there stood a bull-riding form like Shiva's own, and Brahma, ashamed, stood with his face down while the gods looked on. He begged pardon and asked for a penance. Shiva said, "With this head, do tapas, and you will be known on earth as Rudra's head. Whoever hears your story, and gives up another man's wife, is freed. As people tell it, your sin is cleared. Being laughed at is your penance." The four drops that fell became four kinds of clouds: Samvartaka, Avarta, Pushkara and Drona. Sati grew calm. Brahma finished the wedding. Asked for his fee, Brahma begged Shiva to stay always on the altar, so that those who see him on Chaitra's bright thirteenth, a Sunday, are freed from sin and sickness. Shiva agreed. Sati rode the bull to Himavat, and they came to Kailasa. Hearing this at a wedding brings an unhindered marriage.
