The story · English

Narada asked Brahma to tell him more of Sati and Shiva, the married pair. What did they do in their life together? Brahma said they played always in the ways of the world. Some wise people say Sati knew separation from Shiva. But Brahma wondered how that could be true, since the two are joined like word and meaning, power and its lord. Perhaps it happened because they love their play. Sati, Daksha's daughter, was abandoned by her husband. At her father's sacrifice, because Shambhu was slighted, she gave up her body. She was born again in the Himalayas, as Parvati, and won Shiva after great austerity. Narada then asked why Shiva abandoned a wife dear as his life, and why she died at her father's rite.

Brahma bowed to Mahesa and began. All this is Shiva's play, he said. The Lord is free and unchanging, and Sati is the same. Otherwise who could do such deeds? Vishnu worships him, and so do Brahma, the gods, the sages, Sanaka and the others. Shesha sings his glory forever and never reaches its end. No one is at fault in what happens, for he moves all things. Once Rudra rode his bull around the three worlds with Sati, a master of play. They came to the Dandaka forest. There Shiva saw Rama with Lakshmana. Rama was searching for Sita, whom Ravana had stolen by a trick. He cried out, "Ha Sita," weeping again and again, asking the trees where she had gone.

Rama was of the Sun's line, Dasharatha's son and Bharata's elder brother. Now he was without joy and without radiance. Shiva, whose every wish is fulfilled, bowed to Rama gladly, said "Victory," and went on without showing himself. Sati saw this and was astonished, and Shiva's maya deluded her. She said, "Lord of lords, Brahma and Vishnu serve you, and you are the one all should bow to. Who are these two men, wandering in the forest, wounded by separation, poor and worn, carrying bows? You saw the elder, dark as a blue lotus, and became glad and bowed as a devotee does. Only a servant bows to the one he serves. Please cut my doubt." Shiva laughed and answered her plainly.

He said, "They are brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, of the Sun's line, sons of Dasharatha. The younger, Lakshmana, is Shesha. The elder, Rama, is Vishnu in full, come down to protect the good and to serve us." Sati did not believe it, for Shiva's maya is strong and deludes the three worlds. Seeing her doubt, Shiva said, "If your mind does not trust my words, test Rama yourself. Do whatever will clear your confusion. I will wait under the banyan tree." Sati went and thought, how shall I test him? She would take Sita's form and go to him. If he was Hari, he would know. She came near Rama as Sita. Rama saw her and said the name Shiva, laughed, knew her at once, and bowed.

Rama asked, "Sati, where is Shambhu? Why are you alone in the forest without your husband, and why have you given up your own form for this one? Tell me, and be kind to me." Hearing this, Sati was stunned. She remembered what Shiva had said, and was deeply ashamed. She knew Rama to be Vishnu, took back her own form, and said, "Shiva came here with me and his attendants. He saw you searching for Sita, and bowed, and went to sit under the banyan, praising your greatness. I was confused and tested you at his word. Now I know you are Vishnu. Tell me truly, why does he bow to you?" Rama remembered Shambhu, and his love grew. He did not go to Shiva without Sati's leave, but spoke at length of Shiva's glory.

Rama told her an old story. Once Shiva called Vishwakarma and had a hall built in his own world. In it stood a throne and a great canopy. He called the gods, siddhas, gandharvas, nagas, sages and Brahma with his sons. Apsarases brought auspicious maidens, sixteen by sixteen, with music. He called Hari from Vaikuntha, and in joy seated him on the throne, crowned him, and gave him all his own power. Then Mahesa said, "From now on Vishnu is to be honored by all. Let the Vedas praise him as they praise me." Then Rudra himself bowed to Vishnu. He gave him great boons: to create, keep and end the worlds, three powers, and maya that deludes the universe.

Shiva said, "Whoever hates you, I will punish. Your devotees I will bring to liberation. Brahma is my right arm, and Rudra, my heart, is myself." He gave Vishnu Goloka as a home. After this Shiva played freely on Kailasa. Vishnu guarded the world and has now come as four sons, Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna, at Shiva's word. Rama said, "At my father's command I came to the forest with Sita and Lakshmana. A night-wanderer stole my wife. If I have seen you, Sati, all will go well, and I will win Sita back and kill that wicked demon by your grace." He bowed to Sati and walked on through the forest. Sati was glad, praising his devotion to Shiva, then grieved over what she had done. She went back pale and silent, thinking, "I have not believed Shiva. What will I answer?" She bowed to Shiva in her heart.

Shiva asked kindly how she had tested Rama. She said nothing and stood grieving. Shiva saw it all in meditation. He remembered the vow he had made, when Hari, angry, had asked him for it. He thought, "If I love Daksha's daughter as before, my vow is broken." So in his mind he gave her up, and kept his vow. As he went toward his mountain, a voice from the sky said, "Blessed are you, Lord. No other yogi keeps a vow like yours." Sati asked what vow it was. He would not say. By meditation she understood it was her own abandonment. She wept and sighed. Shiva told her many tales and came to Kailasa, then sat in deep samadhi. Sati stayed there, deeply sad. A long time passed. When Shiva ended his meditation, she came and bowed. He seated her before him and told her tales, and she was without sorrow again. He had not broken his vow. Brahma said, do not wonder at this in Shiva. Who truly knows their play? Their parting is by their own will.
