The story · English
Brahma tells the story. Long ago a great sacrifice was held at Prayaga, and great sages gathered there. Sanaka and the others came, with the divine seers, the Prajapatis, the gods, and the knowers of Brahman. Brahma came too, with his household and with the Vedas standing beside him in bodily form. It was a wonderful gathering, and they spoke of knowledge and the many scriptures. At that moment Rudra arrived with Bhavani and his attendants, the lord who works for the good of the three worlds. The gods, the siddhas and the sages saw Shiva and bowed to him with devotion, and Brahma praised him as well. At Shiva's word they all took their places, glad, content with the sight of him, speaking of their own rites.
Then Daksha came, lord of the Prajapatis, radiant and well pleased, arriving as chance would have it. He bowed to Brahma and was seated by Brahma's order. He was a ruler of the universe, honoured and proud, and turned away from the truth. The gods and seers praised him and bowed to him, and he stood with folded hands. Shiva, sitting in his own seat, did not bow. Seeing this, Daksha, Brahma's son, grew angry all at once. With a cruel look he said loudly to everyone: "All these gods, demons, brahmins and seers bow to me. Why does this one not? He lives in the cremation ground, shameless, surrounded by ghosts and spirits, a drunken scoffer at proper conduct. Because he does not bow, I will curse him."
Full of rage, Daksha spoke again: "Hear me, brahmins and gods. This Rudra is cast out of the sacrifice by me. Let him have no share with the gods, this cremation-ground dweller of no family and no birth." Bhrigu and many others heard this and agreed, and they scorned Rudra as an evil being. Nandi heard it, eyes red with fury, and answered at once: "You fool, Daksha. How dare you cast my lord out of the sacrifice? By remembering him alone, sacrifices bear fruit and holy places become pure. How can you curse Shiva?" Daksha, rebuked, cursed Nandi and all Rudra's followers: they would be cut off from the Vedas, drinkers of wine, wearing matted hair, ashes and bones.
Nandi, son of Shilada, was shaken with anger and answered: "Daksha, you have cursed Shiva's servants for nothing, and without knowing Shiva's truth. Bhrigu and the rest mocked the great lord out of brahmin pride. So I curse every brahmin who turns against Rudra. Let them hold to the Vedas in words and miss their truth. Let them be greedy, angry, begging and shameless, serving the lowly at their sacrifices, poor, taking gifts, and some of them become Brahmarakshasas. And you, Daksha, will soon have a goat's face." A great cry of dismay went up. Shiva, smiling, answered Nandi gently: "Do not be angry. You have cursed the brahmins for nothing, and I was not truly cursed. The Veda cannot be cursed. Be calm." Nandi grew calm. Shiva left with his attendants, while Daksha went home with the brahmins, still full of hatred for Shiva's worshippers.
Brahma continues. Some time later Daksha began a great sacrifice at the holy place Kanakhala. All the sages and gods came, deluded by Shiva's power: Agastya, Kashyapa, Atri, Vamadeva, Bhrigu, Dadhichi, Vyasa, Bharadvaja, Gautama and many more, with wives and children. Brahma was brought from Satyaloka, and Vishnu from Vaikuntha, with his attendants. Daksha honoured them all, housing them in fine halls made by Tvashta. Bhrigu and others served as priests, Vishnu presided, and Brahma directed the rites. Eighty-eight thousand priests made offerings, sixty-four thousand sang, and Narada and others recited. But Daksha did not invite Shiva, whom he called the skull-bearer, nor Sati, his own daughter, because she was that man's wife.
Not seeing Shiva, the Shaiva sage Dadhichi spoke: "Listen, all of you. Why has Shambhu not come? This sacrifice does not shine without him. Bring him quickly with Sati, and the sacrifice will be pure. Otherwise it will stay incomplete." Daksha answered, half laughing: "Vishnu, root of the gods, is here, and Brahma, and the Vedas, and Indra. What do we need Rudra for? I gave him my daughter only because Brahma urged me. He is lowborn, without father or mother, lord of ghosts. Do not say this again." Dadhichi replied: "Without Shiva this is no sacrifice. Destruction will come to you here." He left alone, and other followers of Shiva left, cursing. Daksha laughed and said it was better so. The gods, deluded, carried on. Brahma says the sacrifice's curse is told; next comes its destruction.
