The story · English

Brahma said: The gods and sages were setting out for Daksha's sacrifice, in festive mood. At that very time, on Mount Gandhamadana, Sati, Daksha's daughter, was playing in a pavilion with her friends, enjoying many kinds of games. Then she saw the Moon hurrying toward her father's sacrifice, after taking leave of Rohini. She called to Vijaya, her closest friend, dear as her own life: "Vijaya, best of my friends, go and ask where the Moon is hurrying off to." Vijaya went quickly and asked him politely where he was going. He gladly told her everything about Daksha's sacrifice and the festival. Vijaya returned, flustered, and repeated all of it to Sati.

Sati was astonished. She turned the matter over and could find no reason for it. She thought: "Daksha is my father. Virini is my mother. Why have they not invited me, their dear daughter? Have they forgotten me? I will go and ask Shankara the reason, with respect." She made up her mind, left Vijaya there, and went at once to Shiva. She found him in the middle of his assembly, surrounded by many attendants, Nandi and the other great warriors, chiefs of the troops. Seeing her lord, Sati came close to ask her question. Shiva took her onto his lap, spoke kindly to her, and honored her. Then he asked: "Why have you come here to the assembly, so troubled? Tell me the reason, my dear."

Sati bowed with folded hands and said: "I have heard that my father is holding a great sacrifice. A great festival is going on there, and the gods and sages have gathered. Why do you not wish to go, Lord of lords? Tell me. Friends keep company with friends, and that is their duty, since it deepens love. So come with me to my father's sacrifice, I ask you." Her words pierced Shiva like arrows from Daksha's own speech, yet he answered gently and truthfully: "Daksha is your father, but he is especially my enemy. The proud ones who go there, the sages and gods among them, are fools without knowledge."

Shiva went on: "Those who go to another's house uninvited meet with insult worse than death. Even Indra becomes small in another's house. So neither you nor I should go to Daksha's sacrifice. I tell you this because it is true. A man is not hurt by enemies' arrows as he is hurt by the cruel words of his own people." Sati, hearing this, spoke in anger: "You are the one by whom any sacrifice bears fruit, Shambhu, lord of all. My wicked father has left you uninvited. I want to learn what is in the heart of that wicked man, and in all the gods and sages who have gone there. So I will go to my father's sacrifice today. Give me leave, my lord."

Rudra, who knows everything and sees everything, answered her: "If you truly wish to go, then go quickly to your father's sacrifice, on my word. Mount this bull Nandin, ready and adorned." Sati dressed with care, climbed onto the decorated bull, and rode toward her father's house. Shiva gave her royal honors: a fine parasol, fly-whisks, beautiful clothes and ornaments. Sixty thousand of his fierce attendants went with her at his command, full of eagerness and joy. A great celebration rose along the way, led by Vamadeva's troops. They sang the glory of Shiva and Sati, and the brave ones leapt about happily. Sati's going was splendid in every way, and a sound of gladness filled the three worlds.
