Sati Gives Up Her Body

The story · English

Brahma told Narada what happened next. Sati, the daughter of Daksha, went to her father's house, where a great sacrifice was under way. Gods, demons and sages had gathered, and the place was bright with wonders. She stood at the gate, climbed down from her seat, and walked into the sacrificial ground quickly and alone, leaving Nandin behind. Her mother, Asikni, welcomed her with honour, and so did her sisters. Daksha gave her nothing, not even a glance. No one else dared to greet her either, afraid of him and bewildered by Shiva's power of illusion. Sati bowed to her mother and father. Then she looked about the sacrifice and was astonished. Portions were set aside for Vishnu and the other gods. There was no portion for Shambhu. Her anger rose until she could hardly bear it.

Sati looked at Daksha with a fierce eye, as if she would burn him, and spoke. "Why have you not invited Shambhu, the most auspicious of beings, by whom this whole world, moving and unmoving, is made pure? He is the sacrifice, its limbs and its fee, and the one who performs it. How can there be a sacrifice without him? Remembering him alone makes everything clean. Without him, all you have done is unclean. The offerings, the mantras, the oblations are all his. Have you lost your mind, Daksha, worst of fathers? Vishnu, Brahma and the rest won their places by serving Maheshvara, and you do not know Hara." Then she turned to the guests, asking how they could come to this sacrifice without their own lord, and she scolded each of them in turn.

To Vishnu she said: "Do you not know Mahadeva as he truly is, whom the Vedas call with qualities and without? He took you by the hand many times and taught you, yet none of it stays in your mind." To Brahma she said that he had once grown proud with five faces, and Shiva made him four, and he had forgotten. To Indra she said: "Do you not know Mahadeva's power? Your thunderbolt was turned to ash by him." She reminded the sages how Shiva went begging in the Pine Forest and they cursed him, and how even cursed he did what he did, and his sign burned the whole world. All the gods and sages sat silent, afraid. She had said that Shambhu, who stands beyond the Vedas, cannot be known by just anyone.

Daksha heard his daughter and, furious, looked at her with a hard eye. "What use is all this talking? Go or stay, as you like. Why did you come? Your husband Shiva is called inauspicious by the wise. He has no lineage, stands outside the Vedas, and rules over ghosts and spirits, and he wears wretched dress. That is why I did not invite him. I gave you to Rudra on Brahma's urging, a foolish and sinful act, to a proud and ignorant man. So put your anger down, smiling daughter, and take your share, if you came for it." Sati was shamed before everyone. She wondered how she could go back to Shankara, and what she would answer when he asked. Then, sighing, she answered her father.

"Whoever slanders Mahadeva, or hears him slandered, both go to hell for as long as sun and moon last. So I will give up this body and enter the fire. What is life to me, father, when I have heard my lord despised? If one is able, he should cut out the slanderer's tongue by force. If he cannot, he should close his ears and leave." Then she regretted the words and remembered what Shankara had once told her. Fearless, she turned on Daksha and on Vishnu, the gods and the sages. "Father, you slander Shambhu and will come to grief. Shiva has no enemy and loves all, and only you oppose him. Those who wear what he has cast off on their heads are gods and sages. I want nothing of this body that came from you."

"When Shiva calls me Daksha's daughter, I am ashamed. So I will leave this body, born of you and foul like a corpse, and I will be at peace. Gods and sages, listen: you are all deluded, you who love the quarrel against Shiva, and you will surely be punished by Hara." With that she fell silent and remembered Shambhu, dearer to her than life. She sat facing north on the ground, rinsed her mouth with water, wrapped herself in a cloth, and closed her eyes. She entered the way of yoga, drew the breaths together, and raised the upward breath through navel, heart and throat to the place between the brows. Burning in her own fire, she fixed her mind on her husband's feet. Her body fell and turned to ash. A cry of grief rose from sky and earth.

The gods cried out, "Who has driven Sati to leave her life?" Shiva's attendants, standing at the gate, rose in fury with weapons. Some killed themselves in grief with sharp blades. Two thousand ten thousand died with Sati. The rest rushed at Daksha. Bhrigu poured an offering into the southern fire with a mantra that destroys those who destroy sacrifices, and thousands of mighty Ribhus sprang up and drove the attendants away. The gods sat silent. Then a voice from the sky spoke to Daksha: "Fool, you did not honour Sati, mother of the three worlds, nor Shiva, whom Vishnu and Brahma serve. Your sacrifice will be destroyed. Gods, leave this hall, Hari, Brahma, all of you, or be destroyed." Then it stopped, and the gods and sages were amazed.
