Narada asked Brahma what happened next. What did Daksha do when the voice from the sky spoke? What did the others do? And the followers of Shiva, beaten back by the power of Bhrigu's mantras, where did they go? Brahma answered. When the gods heard the voice from the sky, they were astonished, and they stood bewildered, saying nothing. The heroes who had fled from Bhrigu's mantras, and the few of Shiva's followers who remained, came to Shiva for shelter. With deep respect they bowed and told Rudra, whose radiance has no measure, everything that had happened, just as it happened.

The followers said: "God of gods, Mahadeva, protect us who have come to you. Listen, Lord, to the whole story of Sati. Daksha, proud and wicked, insulted her and showed no regard for the gods. He gave you no share of the offering, though he gave shares to the other gods, and he spoke harsh words aloud. When Sati saw that your share was missing at the sacrifice, she grew angry. She condemned her father again and again, and then she burned her own body. "Ten thousand of us died there from shame. Others of us cut our limbs with weapons. The rest rose in fury to wreck the sacrifice, but Bhrigu drove us back with his power. Now we have come to you. Free us from fear, and do as you wish."

Brahma went on. The Lord heard his followers, and he called Narada to mind, so that he might learn the whole matter quickly. Narada, divine sage, you came at once, bowed to Shankara with devotion, and stood with folded hands. Shiva praised you and asked what had happened to Sati at Daksha's sacrifice, and what came after. You told him everything that had taken place there. When Rudra heard your words, he flew into a terrible anger. He tore out one lock of his hair, the destroyer of the worlds, and in fury he struck it against a mountain. The lock split in two, and a roar went up as dreadful as the great dissolution of the world.

From the first part of that lock rose Virabhadra, enormously strong and fearful, the foremost of Shiva's followers. He covered the earth on every side and still stood ten fingers taller, blazing like the fire at the world's end, with a thousand arms. From the angry breath of great Rudra there came a hundred fevers and thirteen kinds of delirium. From the other part of the lock arose Mahakali, terrible to see, surrounded by crores of spirits. All of them had taken shape, cruel and frightening to the worlds, burning with their own light as if they would scorch everything around them. Then Virabhadra bowed to the Supreme Lord and spoke with folded hands.

Virabhadra said: "Great Rudra, terrible one, whose eyes are the moon, the sun and fire, what must I do? Command me quickly. Shall I dry up the oceans in half a moment, or grind the mountains to powder? Shall I burn the whole universe to ash, or the gods, or the great sages? Shall I comfort the worlds, or destroy every living creature? "Nothing is beyond me by your grace. No one has ever matched me in strength, nor will anyone. Wherever you send me, I will finish the task. Even with a blade of grass sent by you, a great deed is done in an instant. All strength comes from your favour. Whoever is firm in devotion to you always wins. Send me today."

Brahma said that Shiva, lord of Mangala, was pleased by these words. He blessed Virabhadra, saying, "Be victorious," and then spoke again. Maheswara said: "Listen to me, Virabhadra, and carry it out with care. Daksha, the son of Brahma, has set out to perform a sacrifice. He is wicked, proud and foolish, and he is my enemy. Burn that sacrifice to ash, with all its attendants, and return quickly to my abode, best of my followers. "Be they gods, gandharvas or yakshas, burn them today. Be it Vishnu, Brahma, Indra or Yama, strike them down. Those who stand there having broken the oath Dadhichi made on my behalf, burn them without fail."

Shiva continued: "If Vishnu and the others come by mistake, burn them too, with the mantra that draws them in. Anyone who stays there proud, having broken my oath, is my enemy. Burn them in a garland of flame, with their wives and households, and then come back at once. "When you arrive, the gods will praise you with respect. Even then, burn them quickly. Burn those who have wronged me. Burn Daksha and all his kin with their wives. And when you have burned him, hero, drink the water of the sacrifice at your ease." Brahma said that Shiva, whose eyes were red with anger, the keeper of the Vedas' limits, then fell silent.

Brahma told how Virabhadra, delighted, heard Shiva's order, bowed to Maheswara and set out for the sacrifice, bearing the command on his head. Shiva also sent crores of followers with him for his splendor, heroes bright as fire. Virabhadra rode in a chariot, thousand-armed, with serpents upon him, wearing Shiva's dress and ornaments. Ten thousand lions drew it, and more lions guarded its sides, with tigers, crocodiles, fish and elephants by the thousand. Flowers fell from the wishing trees. With him went the nine Durgas, Kali, Katyayani, Ishani, Chamunda, Bhadrakali, Bhadra, Tvarita and Vaishnavi, and Mahakali too. Dakinis, Shakinis, ghosts, Brahma-rakshasas, Bhairavas and the sixty-four Yoginis all came to destroy Daksha's sacrifice.

Brahma named the leaders. Shankukarna came with ten crores, Kekaraksha with ten, Vikrita with eight, Vishakha with sixty-four, Parijatrika with nine, Sarvanga with six. Jvalakesha led twelve crores. Kala, Kalaka and Mahakala came with a hundred crores, and Agnikrit with a hundred. Nila led ninety crores, and Purnabhadra and Chaturvaktra a hundred. Many others came as well, among them Virupaksha, Bhringiriti and Lokantaka. Drums, conches and horns sounded, and many good omens appeared. But Daksha saw evil signs. His left eye and arm twitched, the earth shook, the sun turned dark, meteors fell and vultures covered the sacrifice hall. Daksha and the gods vomited blood. A voice from the sky said: "Shame on your birth, Daksha. You are a fool. A great sorrow from Shiva cannot be turned aside."

Terrified, Daksha went to Vishnu, bowed and said: "Protect me and my sacrifice. You guard the rite." Vishnu raised him, remembered Shiva and answered: "You insulted Shankara without knowing him. When the one who deserves worship is not worshipped, poverty, death and fear come. I broke Shiva's oath by mistake, so I will suffer with you. Even my discus Sudarshana will not touch this host, for it is Shiva's own. Virabhadra will burn us. Where could anyone shelter who hates Shankara? No one escapes the weapons of Shiva's followers. Kalabhairava once cut off Brahma's fifth head with his fingernail." Then Virabhadra's army arrived, roaring, and the three worlds shook. Vishnu stood with his face pale, and the gods saw the ocean of troops come with Virabhadra.
