The story · English

Brahma tells it to Narada. Indra laughed, and with the thunderbolt in his hand he wanted to fight, together with the gods. Indra rode his elephant, Agni a goat, Yama a buffalo, Nirriti a corpse. Varuna, the one with the noose, rode a sea-monster, Vayu a deer, and Kubera sat in the Pushpaka chariot, armed and wide awake. The yakshas, caranas and guhyakas mounted their own mounts. Seeing them stir, Daksha came to them with his wife and said: "It is by your strength that I began this great sacrifice. You are the proof that it will succeed." The gods hurried out to fight. Deluded by Shiva's maya, Indra and the world-guardians met Shiva's attendants in a great battle of spears and arrows, with conches, drums and kettledrums sounding.

The gods, praising themselves at the noise, struck down Shiva's attendants. Bhrigu, the sacrificer, worked his mantras and drove them back, and the attendants were cut down and turned away. Seeing his own side beaten, Virabhadra grew furious. He put the ghosts, spirits and pisacas behind him, set those riding bulls in front, and took a great trident. He struck the gods, yakshas, sadhyas, guhyakas and caranas down, and his host cut them with swords and clubs. Some were split in two. Beaten, the gods scattered, each abandoning the other, and fled to heaven. Only the world-guardians under Indra stayed, anxious. They gathered, humbled, and asked Brihaspati: "Teacher, wise one, tell us quickly, where will our victory come from?"

Remembering Sambhu, Brihaspati spoke to Indra, who was weak in understanding. "What Vishnu said before has all come true today. Listen closely. There is a lord of the yakshas who gives the fruit of every act, yet he serves the doer and is not the master of himself. Mantras, herbs, rites, the Vedas and every scripture cannot grasp Mahesa. He is known only through devotion with no other refuge, through peace and a calm unclouded gaze, and by his grace. Indra, you came to Daksha's sacrifice like a child. What courage can you show? These attendants of Rudra, terrible in anger, have come to ruin the sacrifice and will do it. There is no remedy at all. I tell you truly." Hearing this, the gods and their guardians fell into worry.

Then Virabhadra, surrounded by great warriors and thinking of Shankara, spoke to Indra and the guardians. "You have all come to take your share in your foolishness. Come to me, and I will give it. Sakra, Agni, Sun, Moon, Kubera, Varuna, Vayu, Nirriti, Yama, Sesha, come, wise ones, and I will feed you until you are satisfied." Saying this in rage, he struck them all with white arrows, and the gods, Indra at their head, fled in the ten directions. When the guardians had gone, Virabhadra came with his host to the edge of the sacrificial ground. The terrified sages bowed to Vishnu: "God of gods, protect Daksha's sacrifice. You are the sacrifice itself. There is no other protector."

Hearing the sages, Vishnu, afraid yet ready to fight, came out of the sacrificial ground with his gods: four-armed, armed with the discus. Virabhadra, trident in hand, saw him, and his brow knotted, like Death before a sinner, or a lion before an elephant. "You, Hari, you broke Rudra's oath. Where did this pride come from? Who are you, and who protects you in the three worlds? Did you not see what Dakshayani did, or hear what Dadhica said? You came for your share too. I will give it: I will split your chest with my trident." Vishnu smiled and answered: "Do not call me Rudra's enemy. I serve Shankara. Daksha begged me, and I am ruled by my devotees. Let me stop you, and you stop me."

Virabhadra laughed and said it was only a test of Vishnu's heart. "As Shiva is, so are you, and as you are, so is Shiva. The Vedas say so. By Shiva's command we are all his servants." Vishnu smiled: "Fight me without fear. Filled with your weapons, I will go home." Both armed themselves. Virabhadra climbed a divine chariot, roared like a lion, and Vishnu blew his conch Pancajanya. Hearing it, the fled gods returned. Duels followed: Indra against Nandin, each wounding the other, the thunderbolt against the trident. Agni fought with a spear, Yama with Mahaloka, Nirriti with Canda, Varuna with Munda, Vayu with Bhringin, Kubera with the lord of the kushmandas. Bhairava, with his yoginis, tore gods open and drank their blood, and Kali drank much more.

Vishnu hurled his discus, blazing across the ten directions, and the kshetrapala swallowed it. Vishnu wiped the creature's mouth and drew it out. Then he fought Virabhadra himself, and from his yogic power countless attendants with conch, discus and mace arose, as strong as he. Virabhadra burned them all with his trident, remembering Shiva, then struck Vishnu in the chest. Vishnu fell senseless. Rising, eyes red, he raised the discus, but Virabhadra froze it in his hand, and Vishnu stood still as a mountain. Freed, he took his bow Sarnga, and three arrows cut it in three. Hearing my words and knowing Virabhadra's power unbearable, Vishnu chose to vanish. He and the others went to their own worlds, remembering Shiva. I went to Satyaloka, grieving for my son.

The sacrifice, in the form of a deer, ran toward the sky, and Virabhadra seized it and cut off its head. He struck down Dharma, Kasyapa, Arishtanemi, Angiras and the others, cut Sarasvati's nose-tip, and Manibhadra trampled Bhrigu and tore out his beard. Canda knocked out Pushan's teeth, Nandin tore out Bhaga's eyes. They seized Daksha; his head would not yield to blades, so Virabhadra twisted it off by hand, a foot on his chest, and threw it into the fire. The rest were burned like moths. Virabhadra laughed until the three worlds filled with it. Flowers fell from heaven, cool fragrant winds blew, and drums sounded. He went to Kailasa, his work done, like the sun after darkness. Seeing him, Sambhu was pleased and made him chief of the heroic attendants.
