Suta told how Narada, hearing Brahma's words, asked him with wonder: why did Vishnu go with the gods to Daksha's sacrifice and leave Shiva out? Did Hari not know Shambhu's power at the world's end? And why did he fight Shiva's attendants like a fool? Narada asked Brahma to cut this doubt and tell Shiva's story. Brahma told him to listen with love. Long ago, he said, Hari lost his clear knowledge through the curse of the sage Dadhicha. That is why he went to Daksha's sacrifice with the gods, helping the king Kshuva. Narada then asked what had made Dadhicha curse Vishnu, and why Vishnu had angered him by standing with Kshuva.
Brahma answered. There was a king named Kshuva, radiant and powerful, who had been a friend of the great sage Dadhicha. But over long years of austerity a quarrel grew between them, and it became famous in all three worlds for the harm it caused. Dadhicha, a devotee of Shiva and a knower of the Veda, declared that among the three classes, the Brahmin is the best, without doubt. Kshuva, dazzled by his own splendor, answered: "A king bears the bodies of the eight guardians of the world. So the king is the highest, lord of the classes and stages of life. The scripture calls the king made of all the gods. I am that great deity, sage. So a king is better than a Brahmin, descendant of Chyavana. Think it over. I must not be slighted. You should honor me in every way."
Dadhicha, of the line of Bhrigu, heard words that went against the Veda and tradition, and he was furiously angry. Proud of his own worth, he struck Kshuva on the head with his left fist. Kshuva, struck, roared with rage, the lord of the earth with his warped mind. He cut Dadhicha down with his thunderbolt, and the sage fell to the ground. Dadhicha remembered Shukra, who came at once, a yogi and the foremost devotee of Shiva. He joined Dadhicha's body together as it had been before, and healed the wound. Then he said: "Dadhicha, my child, worship Shiva, lord of all. I will teach you the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, the best in the Veda."
Shukra gave him the mantra: "Tryambakam yajamahe," we worship the three-eyed one, father of the three worlds, lord of the three qualities, whose fragrance nourishes all beings, in every creature, sense and god, as scent is in a flower. From him come nature and the person, and by him all are nourished. By action, austerity, study, yoga, meditation and truth, one worships him, and he himself frees us from the noose of death, as a ripe cucumber is freed from its vine. Shukra called it the best mantra that brings the dead back to life. He told Dadhicha to chant it with love, offer, and drink water consecrated by it day and night, remembering Shiva, and then no fear of death would come. He also gave the meditation on Shiva with his consort Girija, the moon pouring nectar over him. Then Shukra went home, remembering Shankara.
Dadhicha went into the forest with great love, remembering Shiva, and there he chanted the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for a very long time and practiced austerity. Shiva, kind to his devotees, was pleased and appeared before him. Dadhicha rejoiced, bowed with folded hands, and praised him. Shiva, gently pleased, said, "Ask for a boon." Dadhicha, with hands joined, said: "God of gods, Mahadeva, give me three boons: bones like the thunderbolt, that no one can kill me, and that I am never humbled anywhere." Shiva said, "So be it," and gave all three. Dadhicha, glad, went quickly to Kshuva's place. He struck the king on the head with his foot. Kshuva, full of rage and proud of Vishnu's favor, hit Dadhicha in the chest with his thunderbolt. But the thunderbolt did not harm the sage, through Shiva's power, and Kshuva was amazed.
Kshuva went into the forest and worshipped Hari, Mukunda, the younger brother of Indra, protector of those who take refuge. Pleased, Vishnu, Madhusudana, whose banner bears Garuda, gave him a divine vision. Kshuva bowed and praised him, then said: "Lord, a Brahmin named Dadhicha was once my friend. By Shiva's power no one can kill him. He struck my head with his left foot, in the assembly, and said proudly, 'I am not afraid.'" Hari thought of Shiva's matchless power. He said: "Brahmins have no fear anywhere, and devotees of Rudra least of all. But that Brahmin has hurt you. By his curse I and the gods will be destroyed at Daksha's sacrifice, and I will rise again. Still, I will try to win for you." Kshuva said, "So be it," and waited. Vishnu went to Dadhicha's hermitage as a Brahmin, to trick him, and asked for one boon. Dadhicha said: "I know you. You are Hari in a Brahmin's disguise, come for Kshuva. By Rudra's grace I know past, present and future. Drop the trick and remember Shankara. I am afraid of no one, god or demon." Vishnu asked him to say once, "I am afraid." Dadhicha laughed and refused.
Vishnu grew angry and raised his discus, but it went blunt against the Brahmin. Dadhicha smiled: "Your Sudarshana comes from Shiva and will not strike me. Use all your weapons, Brahmastra and the rest." Vishnu loosed them all, and the gods, with Indra, hurled their arms at one sage. Dadhicha took a fist of kusha grass, remembering Shiva, and it became a blazing trident like the fire at the end of time. All the weapons bowed to it, and the gods fled. Vishnu made countless attendants like himself, and Dadhicha burned them. Then Vishnu showed his cosmic form. Dadhicha showed the universe in his own body and burned Vishnu with Shambhu's fire, saying, "Drop this illusion." Kshuva came with Brahma and begged, and Dadhicha forgave him. But seeing Vishnu and the gods, he cursed them: "Destroyed by Rudra's fire." He told Kshuva that Brahmins are strong, and entered his hermitage. Kshuva went home, and Vishnu went to his world. That place became the tirtha Sthaneshvara, which brings union with Shiva. Whoever tells this story defeats untimely death and reaches Brahma's world, and fears no death in battle.
