The story · English

Narada asked Brahma what happened after Virabhadra destroyed Daksha's sacrifice and went back to Mount Kailasa. Brahma told him. The gods and sages had been beaten, their bodies torn by Rudra's troops, and they came to Brahma's world. They bowed to him, praised him at length, and told him every part of their suffering. Brahma was already grieving for his son Daksha, and he thought, with an aching mind: 'What can I do now, quickly, that will bring the gods peace? How can Daksha live, and the sacrifice be finished?' He turned it over many ways and found no rest. Then he remembered Vishnu with devotion, and the right course came to him. He went with the gods and sages to Vishnu's world, bowed, praised him, and said: 'We have come to you for shelter. Make it so that the sacrifice is completed.'

Vishnu heard Brahma, called Shiva to mind, and answered with a humble heart. 'Those who wrong the powerful do not prosper, Brahma. The gods have sinned against Shiva, the supreme lord, because they took away his share of the offering. So all of you must now ask his forgiveness with a pure mind. When Shiva is angry, the whole world is lost. He is cut off from his beloved wife, and Daksha pierced his heart with harsh words. Only by pleasing him can the sacrifice and its patron be given life again. Neither you nor I, nor the gods, nor the sages truly know his strength. He answers to no one. What remedy can one plan against a fool who opposes such a being? Still, I will go with you all to Shiva's home and ask his pardon.'

So Vishnu set out with Brahma, the gods, the sages and the lords of creatures, toward Kailasa, the mountain Shiva loves, where the Kinnaras live and the perfected yogis dwell. Its peaks were made of many jewels, its slopes were rich with minerals, vines and trees, and deer and birds filled it. Even tigers and the great beasts lived there without cruelty. Ganga flowed around it, the water that sprang from Vishnu's foot and purifies all things. The gods marvelled. Near the mountain they saw Alaka, the city of Kubera, who is Rudra's friend, and the fragrant forest of Saugandhika. Beyond it ran two holy rivers, Nanda and Alakananda, whose very sight takes away sin. Leaving Kubera's city and that forest behind, the gods walked on and soon came to a great banyan tree.

The banyan stood a hundred yojanas high, with no nest in its branches and no heat beneath it, and its shade fell wide across the ground. It was Shiva's own place of yoga, kept by great yogis. Under it Vishnu and the gods saw Shiva himself, seated on a seat of kusha grass, his right foot set on his left knee, a rosary on his forearm, his hand in the gesture of true reasoning. He was teaching Narada, in the hearing of all the good, and the sons of Brahma sat around him in gladness, with Kubera and his own attendants. Ash covered his body. The gods folded their hands and bowed. Shiva rose to meet Vishnu and bowed to him, as one bows to Kashyapa, and then spoke to Vishnu, who stood humbly before him.

Vishnu and the others said: 'Lord of lords, you act as people act in the world, but we know you are Brahman. Why do you bewilder us with your maya? You made this sacrifice through Daksha, and you are the giver of every deed's fruit. Why then did you break it, you who protect Brahmins and cows?' They praised him as the eight forms, earth, water, fire, wind, space, sun, moon and the sacrificer. They said: 'Wind blows from fear of you, fire burns from fear of you, the sun shines, and death runs everywhere.' Then they asked: 'Be gracious. Complete the sacrifice of Daksha. Let Bhaga have his eyes again, Pusha his teeth, Bhrigu his beard. Let the broken bodies be healed. Take your full share.' Vishnu, Brahma and the lords of creatures fell on the ground before him like rods.

Brahma told how Shiva, moved by these pleas, grew calm. He smiled, comforted the gods, and spoke: 'Listen carefully. I do not hold a grudge against children, and I do not dwell on their faults. Those lost in my illusion are given punishment, and that is all. I never ruined Daksha's sacrifice. Whoever hates another brings it upon himself, so no one should ever harm another.' Then he set the cures. Daksha's sacrificial head would become a goat's head. Bhaga would see his share through Mitra's eye. Pusha would eat food ground fine, since the sacrificers broke his teeth. Bhrigu would have a goat's beard. The Ashvins would be the arms, and Pusha's hands would serve as hands. Everyone said: 'Well said.' They bowed to Shiva and went joyfully to Kanakhala, where Daksha's sacrifice had been held.

At Kanakhala Shiva saw what Virabhadra had done. Svaha, Svadha, Pusha, Tushti, Dhriti and Sarasvati lay hurt, and the sages, ancestors and sacred fires with them. Yakshas, gandharvas and rakshasas were torn and mangled, and some lay dead on the field. Shiva called his chief, the mighty Virabhadra, and said with a smile: 'What have you done? A great punishment fell fast on the gods and sages. Bring me Daksha, who caused all this.' Virabhadra brought the headless body and threw it down before Shiva. Shiva asked where the head was. 'I threw it into the fire at that very moment,' said Virabhadra. Shiva ordered the gods to do as he had promised. They fitted a goat's head on Daksha, and as Shiva looked on it, Daksha rose, like a man waking from sleep, alive.

Daksha stood up and saw Shiva before him. His old hatred was gone, and his mind was clear as the autumn moon. He wanted to praise Shiva, but love choked him, and he remembered his dead daughter and could not speak. Then, ashamed and calm, he bowed and said: 'I bow to the giver of boons, the eternal lord, friend of the whole world. Forgive my wrong, Shiva. You blessed me under the cover of punishment. I was a fool and did not know your truth. Today I know that you are above all.' Vishnu spoke next, with tears in his voice: 'Forgive Daksha, who is my devotee. Forgive my own blunder too.' Brahma asked Shiva to complete the sacrifice. Indra and the guardians, the sages, the lords of creatures and the priests all praised Shiva in turn.

Shiva, pleased, looked on them all with kindness and said to Daksha: 'I am bound by my devotees, though no one rules me. Four kinds of people worship me: the one in pain, the one who wants to know, the one who wants wealth, and the one with knowledge. The last is dearest to me. People cannot reach me by Vedas, sacrifices, gifts or austerity alone. That is why I destroyed your sacrifice. From now on, know me as supreme and do your work with knowledge. Brahma, Vishnu and I are one cause of the world, and it is only the ignorant who see us as three. Those who divide the three go to hell. There is no devotion to Vishnu without devotion to Brahma, and none to me without devotion to Vishnu. A Vishnu devotee who mocks me, or a Shaiva who mocks Vishnu, is cursed and does not reach the truth.'

All who heard this were glad. Daksha, full of joy, became devoted to Shiva. At Shiva's word he completed the sacrifice with the priests, gave the gods their shares and Shiva his full share, and gave gifts to the Brahmins. The gods and sages then went home praising Shiva, and Brahma and Vishnu sang his glory as they went. Honoured by Daksha, Shiva returned to Kailasa with his attendants. There he remembered his beloved Sati and told his chief attendants her story. He spent time speaking of her, acting as people do, though he is beyond grief. Sati, having left her body, was born as Gauri, daughter of Himavat and Mena. She won Shiva as her husband by austerity. Brahma says that whoever hears or tells this tale with devotion gains well-being and a good end.
