Dice That Bow to No One

Rig Veda 10.34.8

Meaning · English

Their band of fifty-three plays like the god Savitr, whose law holds true. They do not bend to the fury of the fierce; even a king bows to them.

The gambler speaks of the dice as a crowd with a will of its own. The number is unsure. Sāyaṇa counts fifty-three, the handful players usually threw, while others read three times fifty. Savitr is the sun god who sets the whole world moving, and his law never fails. The dice roam the board with that same sure command. No one's anger moves them, not even a hard man's. A king who sits down to play bows to them as well.

Picture a slot machine on a casino floor. A man in a tailored suit and a man in work boots stand before it, feeding it coins and waiting. It does not care who shouts or who is rich. The dice are like that machine: once a throw is made, rank and temper count for nothing.
