Cold Coals That Burn

Rig Veda 10.34.9

नीचा वर्तन्त उपरि स्फुरन्त्यहस्तासो हस्तवन्तं सहन्ते। दिव्या अङ्गारा इरिणे न्युप्ताः शीताः सन्तो हृदयं निर्दहन्ति

Meaning · English

They roll low, then leap high; handless, they master the man with hands. Sky-born coals strewn on the gaming floor, cold to the touch, they burn the heart out.

The dice lie down on the ground, beneath the player. Yet they jump upward too, into his chest. Sāyaṇa says they leap upon the heart of a gambler who dreads losing. They have no hands, and still they beat the man who has them. They are coals from the sky; some later readers take that word as uncanny or bewitched. Sāyaṇa adds that they burn on bare ground with no wood to feed them. Cold to touch, they leave the heart in ashes through the grief of losing.

A phone lies face-down on a kitchen table. It has no hands and cannot move. Yet every few minutes the person beside it reaches over, turns it up and checks it, half against their will. The small dead object gives the orders, and the living person with hands carries them out.

वे नीचे लुढ़कते हैं, फिर ऊँचे उछलते हैं; बिना हाथों के, वे हाथों वाले मनुष्य पर राज करते हैं। जुए की भूमि पर बिखरे आकाश से जन्मे अंगारे, छूने में ठंडे, वे हृदय को जलाकर राख कर देते हैं।

पासे धरती पर, खिलाड़ी के नीचे पड़े रहते हैं। फिर भी वे ऊपर की ओर भी उछलते हैं, उसकी छाती में। सायण कहते हैं कि वे उस जुआरी के हृदय पर कूदते हैं जो हारने से डरता है। उनके हाथ नहीं हैं, फिर भी वे हाथों वाले को हरा देते हैं। वे आकाश के अंगारे हैं; कुछ बाद के व्याख्याकार उस शब्द को अलौकिक या मायावी के अर्थ में लेते हैं। सायण आगे कहते हैं कि वे नंगी धरती पर जलते हैं, जहाँ उन्हें जलाए रखने को कोई लकड़ी नहीं। छूने में ठंडे, वे हार के शोक से हृदय को राख कर देते हैं।

रसोई की मेज़ पर एक फ़ोन औंधा पड़ा है। उसके हाथ नहीं हैं और वह हिल नहीं सकता। फिर भी हर कुछ मिनट में पास बैठा व्यक्ति हाथ बढ़ाता है, उसे पलटता है और देखता है, आधा अपनी इच्छा के विरुद्ध। वह छोटी निर्जीव वस्तु आदेश देती है, और हाथों वाला जीवित व्यक्ति उन्हें पूरा करता है।
