Dawn Horses, Night Hearth

Meaning · English

The gambler aches to see other men's wives and their well-kept homes. At dawn he yokes the brown horses; by night he drops by the fire, an outcast.

Other households hurt him. He sees a wife living at ease and a house kept in good order. Sāyaṇa reads the ache as recognition: his own wife is suffering and his own house lies neglected. The brown horses are the dice, which he harnesses each morning the way a driver harnesses a team. By nightfall he has lost. Sāyaṇa says he lies down by a fire because he is shivering with cold. He has fallen from his standing among his people.

Picture a man walking home at dusk past lit windows: a table set for supper, a lamp on, someone laughing in a kitchen. He once had a home like that, and he has let it go dark. The gambler's pain is that glance through the glass. It is sharper because he knows exactly what he traded away.
