Ten Fingers Raised
Rig Veda 10.34.12
Meaning · English
To the leader of your great troop, first king of your band, I raise my ten fingers: I hold back no wealth. This I speak as truth.
The gambler turns to the dice and speaks to the chief die as if it were a king at the head of an army. He holds out all ten fingers, stretched forward with palms joined. It is the gesture of a man with nothing left in his hands. Sāyaṇa reads 'I hold back no wealth' as 'I will gather no more money for you,' while others hear 'I am hiding nothing.' Either way, he is done. He swears by rta, the true order of things, that he is not lying.
A man at a pawnshop counter turns his pockets inside out onto the glass. Lint, a bus ticket, a button. The clerk sees there is nothing left to bargain with. The gambler's open fingers before the king of the dice do the same work: empty hands offered as proof that the game has taken everything.
