Plough Instead of Play
Rig Veda 10.34.13
Meaning · English
Stop playing dice; plough your field. Delight in what you earn, and count it plenty. There are your cows, gambler, there your wife. Noble Savitr showed me this.
The advice is short: give up the dice and work the land. Wealth that comes from work is worth enjoying, and it is enough. The phrase about thinking much can be read two ways: valuing what the field gives, or, as Sāyaṇa takes it, trusting the speaker's word. The field is where the cows are and where the wife is, so steady work keeps the household whole. Savitr is the god who sets the world moving each morning, and the gambler says this counsel came from him.
Picture two things on a kitchen table: a pile of scratched-off lottery cards and a weekly pay slip. Each card promised a fortune and left nothing. The slip is modest, but it covers the rent and feeds the children asleep upstairs. The verse sets the dice against that slip: less thrilling, and actually there.
