Present at Every Birth
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.16
Meaning · English
This god pervades every direction. Born first, he is also inside the womb. He is what has been born and what will be born, facing every creature from all sides.
The god the seekers are looking for is not tucked away in one corner of the world. He spreads into every direction there is. He came before anything else appeared, and he is also the life taking shape inside a womb right now. Whatever has already been born is him, and whatever will be born later is him too. Wherever a living being stands, he stands facing it. His face turns every way at once, so nothing exists behind his back.
Picture a mango tree in a yard. It stood there before any of this season's fruit appeared, yet the stone inside each mango carries that same tree, waiting to grow. Last year's saplings came from it, and so will next year's. The one that came first is also the one hidden inside every new beginning.
