Seeing by the Self
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.15
Meaning · English
Using the self's own nature as a lamp, the practiced one sees Brahman here: unborn, unmoving, clear of every element. Knowing this God, one is freed from every fault.
Two truths are set side by side. One is the truth of the self, the awareness inside a person. The other is the truth of Brahman, the reality beneath everything. The first becomes the means of seeing the second. What gets seen is described three ways. It is unborn, so nothing produced it. It is steady, so it does not shift. And it is clean of every element, so none of the materials that make up the world are mixed into it. Knowing this God, a person is released from every fault that binds.
During a power cut, someone strikes a match and lights the candle already sitting on the table. The shelves, the doorway and the far wall all come back into view. Nothing new was carried into the room. In the same way, the self a person already has is what brings Brahman into view.
