The Disc Wiped Clean

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.14

Meaning · English

As a metal disc caked with clay shines bright once it is scrubbed clean, so the embodied one, seeing the self clearly, becomes undivided, fulfilled, and free of grief.

Scrubbing does not put the brightness into the disc. The clay only hid it, and cleaning lets it show. A person living in a body is in the same position. The self is already whole, and practice removes what covers it. Seeing the self as it really is brings three results. The person becomes one, no longer split between the self and what hides it. Whatever needed to be done is done. And grief drops away.

After a winter drive, a car's headlights are coated in road salt and grime, and the beam barely reaches the road. One pass with a rag and the full light throws far ahead. The bulb never dimmed. The self is that bulb. Practice clears the film. It does not make the light.
