Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.13

लघुत्वमारोग्यमलोलुपत्वं वर्णप्रसादं स्वरसौष्ठवं च । गन्धः शुभो मूत्रपुरीषमल्पं योगप्रवृत्तिं प्रथमां वदन्ति

Meaning · English

Lightness, good health, freedom from craving, clear skin, a pleasing voice, a sweet smell, and little urine or stool: these, they say, are yoga's first signs.

The earliest results of steady practice show up in the body. It feels light rather than heavy. Health holds. The pull of craving loosens, so wants stop nagging. The face takes on a clear, even color, and the voice sounds smooth. Even the body's smell turns pleasant, and its waste grows less. The teachers who knew yoga named these as the opening stage: plain, physical signs that the practice has started to work.

A car fresh from a proper tune-up idles quietly, gives off no bad smell, and uses less fuel on the same trip. It has not been driven anywhere new yet, but the engine already shows it is running right. The body's lightness and clear voice are that quiet idle: evidence the inner work is sound, long before arrival.

हल्कापन, अच्छा स्वास्थ्य, लालसा से मुक्ति, निखरी त्वचा, मधुर स्वर, सुहानी गंध और थोड़ा मल-मूत्र: कहते हैं, ये योग के पहले लक्षण हैं।

नियमित अभ्यास के सबसे पहले फल शरीर में दिखाई देते हैं। शरीर भारी नहीं, हल्का लगता है। स्वास्थ्य बना रहता है। लालसा का खिंचाव ढीला पड़ता है, इसलिए इच्छाएँ बार-बार नहीं सतातीं। चेहरे पर साफ़, एक-सा रंग आ जाता है, और स्वर सधा हुआ सुनाई देता है। शरीर की गंध तक सुहानी हो जाती है, और उसका मल घटने लगता है। योग को जानने वाले आचार्यों ने इन्हें आरंभिक अवस्था कहा: सीधे, शारीरिक लक्षण कि अभ्यास ने असर दिखाना शुरू कर दिया है।

अभी-अभी ठीक से सर्विस होकर निकली गाड़ी खड़ी-खड़ी शांत गुनगुनाती है, कोई बुरी गंध नहीं छोड़ती, और उसी सफ़र में कम ईंधन खाती है। उसे अभी किसी नई जगह नहीं ले जाया गया, पर इंजन पहले ही दिखा देता है कि वह ठीक चल रहा है। शरीर का हल्कापन और साफ़ स्वर वही शांत गुनगुनाहट है: इस बात का प्रमाण कि भीतर का काम सही है, मंज़िल तक पहुँचने से बहुत पहले।
