A Body Untouched by Age

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.12

Meaning · English

When earth, water, fire, air and space have risen and yoga's fivefold power is working, whoever gains a body of yoga's fire meets no sickness, aging or death.

Everything in the body is built from five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. As practice deepens, each one is said to stir and become part of yoga's working power instead of simple matter. The person in whom this happens has a body remade by the heat of practice. The fire meant is not a flame that burns. It is the inner warmth that steady discipline builds. Such a body, the seer says, is no longer reached by illness, decline or death.

Picture a bar of iron left in a blacksmith's forge until it glows orange all the way through. It is still iron, with the same shape and weight, but now heat fills every part of it. The practitioner's body stays a body of the five elements, yet the fire of practice runs through all of it.
