Lights Before the Dawning

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.11

Meaning · English

Mist, smoke, sun, wind, fire, fireflies, lightning, crystal, moon: in yoga these shapes come first, walking ahead and letting Brahman begin to show itself.

When yoga starts to take hold, certain sights appear early on: mist, smoke, sun, wind, fire, fireflies, lightning, crystal, moon. The text calls them forms, things seen or sensed in meditation. They go in front, the way scouts walk ahead of a procession. Their work is to bring Brahman, the reality behind everything, into view. The list moves from hazy to bright and clear. These sights are not the arrival itself. They announce that something hidden is starting to become visible.

Someone spins one stick hard against another. First a thin thread of smoke rises. Then a faint red glow appears in the wood dust. Only after that does a flame catch. The smoke and glow are not yet the fire, but they show it was in the wood all along. The lights in meditation are that smoke and glow.
