Choosing a Quiet Spot

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.10

Meaning · English

Level, clean ground, free of pebbles, fire and sand, within sound of water, pleasing to the mind, easy on the eye, a sheltered hollow out of the wind: practise there.

After posture and breath, the text turns to the ground itself. The spot should be even and clean. It should have no pebbles to dig in, no fire giving off heat and smoke, and no sand shifting underfoot. Gentle sounds such as running water are welcome because they suit the mind rather than pull at it. Nothing in view should strain the eyes. The place should be a hollow or cave, sheltered from wind. Practice begins with a setting that makes no demands on the body.

Someone lighting a candle outdoors turns their back to the breeze and cups a hand around the match. The flame is small at first, and any gust ends it. The quiet, level, sheltered spot does the same work for a mind just starting to settle: it keeps the small beginning from being blown out.
