Reins on a Restless Team
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.9
Meaning · English
Restraining the breath, movements steady, he lets it out softly through the nose once it thins. Like a cart behind wild horses, the wise one holds the mind, alert.
There are two steps here, one for the body and one for attention. First the breath is held back and the body's movements are kept still. When the breath has grown thin, it is released quietly through the nose, not gasped out. Then the mind is compared to a cart pulled by badly trained horses that want to bolt. The person who understands keeps hold of it the whole way. They do not let go of the reins, and they do not drift off.
Picture walking a young dog that lunges at every smell and passing bicycle. The person holding the leash does not yank it hard and does not drop it. They keep a firm, even grip and keep watching. The dog is the mind's pull toward everything it notices. The steady hand is the alert holding the verse asks for.
