Crossing the Fearful Currents
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.8
Meaning · English
Body steady, chest, neck and head upright, senses gathered by the mind into the heart, the knower can cross every frightening current on the raft of Brahman.
Three parts of the body, the chest, neck and head, are held upright in one line, and the whole body sits even and still. The senses usually run outward to sights and sounds. Here the mind draws them back and settles them in the heart, the inner center. Then the one who knows crosses over, using Brahman, the reality beneath everything, as the vessel. What gets crossed are currents that bring fear. The text does not name them. Posture and stillness prepare the way, but the vessel is Brahman.
Picture a cloth bag with a drawstring. Held wide open, its mouth gapes and things spill out in every direction. Pull the cord and the opening closes around a single point, holding everything inside. The senses are the open mouth, the mind is the hand on the cord, and the heart is the point where everything gathers.
