Where Old Deeds Stop Clinging
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.7
Meaning · English
Moved by Savitri, the sun that sets things going, take joy in the old sacred word. Make it your home, and your past works will not cling to you.
Savitri is the sun understood as the power that sets things in motion. The practice starts with that push behind it, not on the seeker's effort alone. The old sacred word is the prayer handed down from earlier seers, and it is meant to be enjoyed, not just recited. The word for 'home' also means womb or source, a place one grows from. Settled there, the works done before, the offerings and good deeds counted as merit, stop clinging and binding.
Picture an iron pan seasoned with oil over years. An egg that would weld itself to bare metal slides right off. Nothing was scrubbed away. The surface itself changed. Living inside the old word works like that seasoning. Past deeds still touch the person, but they find nothing to grip.
