Where the Mind Catches Fire

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.6

Meaning · English

Where fire is churned out of the wood, where wind is guided onto the flame, where the soma brims and spills over, there the mind comes to life.

The setting is the old fire rite. Fire is churned: one stick is spun hard against another until a flame appears. Wind is then guided onto it so it catches. Soma, the pressed juice offered in the rite, is poured until it runs past the brim. Where all three happen, the mind is born. The verse sits in a chapter about harnessing the mind. It sets the rite beside the mind: the same effort that draws a hidden flame out of wood draws the mind into life.

Strike a match and nothing in it looks like fire until the head scrapes across the strip. Then a cupped hand shields it, or a breath steers it toward the kindling. The flame was packed in the match all along. The mind works the same way: its brightness is already there, and it shows only through effort and care.
