Yoking the Ancient Prayer
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.5
Meaning · English
I yoke the ancient prayer to you both, with bows. Let my song travel like the sun. Let every child of the deathless hear, all who live in shining realms.
The speaker takes up a very old prayer and fastens it, with bows of respect, to 'you both'. That most likely means the mind and the thinking power, which the verses just before ask to be held steady. He asks that the words travel straight and far, the way the sun keeps its course across the sky. Then he calls for listeners: every being born of the deathless, including those already living in bright, heavenly places.
Think of someone threading a needle. Before any stitching happens, the thread has to be lined up with the tiny eye and held there, hands still. The sewing comes after. Fastening the prayer to the mind works the same way: attention and words are lined up and held together first, so that what follows has somewhere to go.
