Wise Ones Harness Thought
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.4
Meaning · English
The wise yoke their minds and harness their thoughts to the vast, all-seeing One. Knowing every path, he alone set the rites in order. Praise of Savitri rings all around.
Savitri is the god of the sun as it starts the day, the one who sets things moving. The wise turn both their mind and their separate thoughts toward him, and the word used is the one for hitching animals to a cart. He is vast and sees clearly. He alone knows every path, and he gave each priest a part in the rite. So the order of worship is his arrangement. His praise rises on every side.
A choir before a concert: each singer has been handed a part by the one director, tenors here, altos there, and each keeps their eyes on that one person. When they sing, sound fills the hall from every side. The wise fixing their attention on Savitri, the rites he assigned, and the praise that surrounds him work the same way.
