The Holder of the Net
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.1
Meaning · English
The one who holds the net rules all the worlds through his powers. He alone is there as they appear and last. Those who know him become deathless.
The word that keeps returning is one. A single being holds the net, which is the whole spread of the world, every thread of it gathered in one grip. He governs it through his powers, and the line says so twice: he rules, and he rules all the worlds. He is there at the moment things first appear and stays while they last. Those who know this one become free of death, and that is the only reward named.
Picture a weaver at a handloom. Every thread in the cloth passed through the same two hands, from the first knot tied on the frame to the row being added now. Nothing in the cloth wove itself. The world is that cloth, and the one being is the weaver, present at its start and at every row since.
