Rudra Stands Alone
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.2
Meaning · English
Rudra is one; no second stands beside him. He rules the worlds by his powers, faces every creature, builds all worlds, guards them, and gathers them back at time's end.
Those who know this do not look for a second cause beside Rudra. Rudra is an old name for the fierce god, and it is used for the single source of everything. The worlds answer to no other ruler. He governs them through his own powers. He is turned toward every living being, facing each one from the inside. Then a whole cycle fits in one line. He sends the worlds out, watches over them as their protector, and at the end of time pulls them back into himself.
A wave runs up a beach, spreads into foam, shells and wet sand, then slides back into the same sea it came from. Nothing on the beach came from a second ocean. The last line has that movement: worlds go out from one source, are kept while they last, and return to it at the end.
