Maker of the Golden Seed
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.4
Meaning · English
Source and rise of the gods, lord of all, Rudra the great seer first brought forth the Golden Seed. May he join us to clear, good understanding.
The gods are not the top of the ladder. They have a starting point, and it is Rudra. He is the place they come from and the ground they rise out of. He rules the whole world, and he is called a seer, one who sees clearly. Before anything else, he produced the Golden Seed, the first thing made, from which the rest unfolds. Then the speaker makes a request. He does not ask for goods or safety. He asks to be yoked to a mind that is bright and good.
A power strip plugged into the wall: every lamp plugged into it glows, but only because the strip is joined to the source behind the wall. The gods are like those lamps, lit from one supply. The prayer asks for the same kind of connection: that the speaker's mind be plugged into that source and lit by it.
