A Prayer for Gentleness
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.5
या ते रुद्रा शिवा तनूरघोराऽपापकाशिनी । तया नस्तनुवा शन्तमया गिरिशन्ताभिचाकशीहि
Meaning · English
Rudra, you have a form that is kind and not frightening, one that shows nothing harmful. Shine on us with that gentlest form, you who dwell among the mountains.
One power rules and makes the world, and a power that large can be frightening to stand before. The speaker asks to meet a particular side of it. He names that side three ways: kind and favorable, not terrifying, and showing nothing harmful. The word for that side is 'body,' meaning a form Rudra can turn toward people. Then comes the request itself: look on us with the gentlest of those forms, and shine on us with it. He addresses Rudra as the one who lives among the mountains.
A large farm dog that can guard a gate against intruders will lie down and let a small child lean on it. Same animal, same strength. The child does not need a different dog, only that side of it. The prayer asks the same of Rudra: the one who holds all power, turned gently toward us.

रुद्र, तुम्हारा एक रूप है जो दयालु है और भयानक नहीं, जो कुछ भी अनिष्ट नहीं दिखाता। पर्वतों के बीच रहने वाले, उसी सबसे सौम्य रूप से हम पर अपना प्रकाश बिखेरो।
एक ही शक्ति संसार पर शासन करती है और उसे रचती है, और इतनी विशाल शक्ति के सामने खड़ा होना भयावह हो सकता है। वक्ता उसके एक विशेष पक्ष से मिलना चाहता है। वह उस पक्ष को तीन तरह से कहता है: दयालु और अनुकूल, भयानक नहीं, और कुछ भी अनिष्ट न दिखाने वाला। उस पक्ष के लिए जो शब्द आया है वह है 'शरीर', अर्थात् ऐसा रूप जिसे रुद्र लोगों की ओर कर सकते हैं। फिर आती है स्वयं प्रार्थना: उन रूपों में सबसे सौम्य रूप से हमें देखो, और उसी से हम पर प्रकाश बिखेरो। वह रुद्र को पर्वतों के बीच रहने वाला कहकर पुकारता है।
खेत का एक बड़ा कुत्ता, जो घुसपैठियों से फाटक की रखवाली कर सकता है, लेट जाता है और एक छोटे बच्चे को अपने ऊपर टिकने देता है। वही जानवर, वही ताकत। बच्चे को किसी दूसरे कुत्ते की ज़रूरत नहीं, बस उसके उसी पक्ष की। प्रार्थना रुद्र से भी यही माँगती है: सारी शक्ति धारण करने वाला वही, कोमलता से हमारी ओर मुड़ा हुआ।
