Turning the Arrow Kind

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.6

Meaning · English

Mountain-dweller, the arrow in your hand, held ready to shoot: guardian of the mountain, make it gracious. Do not harm people or the living world.

Rudra is a god of wild places, and his arrow stands for the harm he can send. The prayer does not ask him to put that arrow down. It asks him to make it śivā: kind, favorable, a source of good rather than injury. Two names frame the request: he lives on the mountain, and he guards the mountain. Then comes the plain plea. Spare puruṣa, the human being, and spare jagat, everything that moves and breathes.

A beekeeper lifts the lid of a hive. The bees that would sting a stranger drift past her hands and keep making honey. Their stings are still there; nothing has been taken away. What has changed is how that power meets her. The prayer asks the same of Rudra: keep the arrow, but let it land as good.
