Wrapped Around the World
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.7
Meaning · English
Beyond this is Brahman, highest and vast, concealed in every creature according to its body, the one who encircles the whole universe. Knowing that Lord, people become deathless.
After praying to a god of the mountains, the seer points past him. Higher than that is Brahman, the highest, and vast beyond measure. Yet this vast thing is tucked away inside every living creature, shaped to whatever body it sits in, an ant's or a person's. It is also the one thing that wraps around the entire universe from outside. So it is both within and around. It rules over all, and people who come to know it pass beyond death.
A dry stick of wood looks cold and plain. Rub it hard against another and a flame appears, which was in the wood all along. A thin twig yields a small flame, a thick log a large one. Brahman sits in each body the same way: unseen, fitted to its container, the same fire in every piece.
