The Person Beyond Darkness
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.8
Meaning · English
I have come to know this vast Person, sun-colored, on the far side of darkness. Whoever knows him goes past death. No other way leads there.
The speaker is not offering a theory. He says he knows this Person directly. 'Person' here means the one living presence behind everything, not a human being. It is vast, and it has the color of the sun. It stands past darkness, the darkness of not knowing. Knowing it is what carries someone beyond death. The text is plain about the alternatives: nothing else gets a person there.
Picture walking through a long railway tunnel. Inside it is dark, and the track only goes one way: toward the bright opening at the end. The daylight out there was shining the whole time. Reaching it is what ends the tunnel. Knowing this sun-bright Person is that opening, and the text says there is no side door.
