Nothing Smaller, Nothing Greater

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.9

Meaning · English

There is nothing higher than him and nothing lower, nothing finer and nothing vaster. He stands alone, still as a tree fixed in the sky, and this Person fills everything.

The one source of everything is held against every scale we have, and no scale finds an edge. Nothing ranks above him or stands apart from him. In size, nothing is smaller, so he reaches into the tiniest thing. Nothing is larger, so nothing lies outside him. He is single and unmoving, not drifting or changing. He is called the Person, meaning a living, aware presence rather than a blind force. The world is not a room he happens to sit in. It is filled with him.

Stir a spoon of salt into a pot of soup. A single drop on the tongue tastes of it, and so does the whole pot. The salt is in the smallest part and spread through the largest at the same time. The claim has that shape: one presence, found in the tiniest thing and filling the entire world.
