Formless and Untouched by Sickness
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.10
Meaning · English
What lies higher still than this has no shape and knows no sickness. Those who know it pass beyond death; everyone else arrives only at sorrow.
The seer points past the world and everything that fills it, to something higher still. He gives it two marks. It has no form, so there is nothing in it to point at, measure or hold. It has no sickness, so nothing in it can wear down, decay or go wrong. Then he draws one dividing line. Those who come to know it are no longer held by death. Everyone who does not know it ends in suffering, and in nothing else.
A glass jar can chip, crack or shatter, because it has edges and a shape. The air inside it has none. Drop the jar and the pieces scatter across the floor, yet the air is not broken at all. What the seer describes is like that air, not the jar: with no form, damage has nothing to grip.
