The Face in Every Face
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.11
सर्वाननशिरोग्रीवः सर्वभूतगुहाशयः । सर्वव्यापी स भगवांस्तस्मात्सर्वगतः शिवः
Meaning · English
Every face, head and neck is his. He lies hidden in the heart of every creature. Filling all, he is the Blessed One; reaching everywhere, he is the Kind One.
Every face, head and neck is claimed as his. He is not one face among many but what looks out through any face at all. He also lies in the cave of the heart, the hidden inner place of each creature. So he is outside as every form and inside as each one's center. Two titles follow. He is the Blessed One, holding every kind of good fortune. And because he reaches everywhere, he is kind. The word used, shiva, means gracious and auspicious.
Think of a town's electricity. One current lights a kitchen bulb, turns a ceiling fan in the next house, and heats a kettle down the street. Each machine looks different and works on its own, yet the same power runs inside every one. The text sees one presence that way: showing as every face, running quietly inside every heart.

हर मुख, हर सिर और हर गर्दन उसी की है। वह हर प्राणी के हृदय में छिपा रहता है। सबमें भरा होने से वह भगवान है; सब जगह पहुँचा होने से वह कृपालु है।
हर मुख, हर सिर और हर गर्दन उसी की बताई गई है। वह अनेक मुखों में से कोई एक मुख नहीं, बल्कि वह है जो किसी भी मुख से बाहर देखता है। वह हृदय की गुफा में भी रहता है, जो हर प्राणी का छिपा हुआ भीतरी स्थान है। इस तरह वह बाहर हर रूप बनकर है और भीतर हर एक का केंद्र बनकर। इसके बाद दो नाम आते हैं। वह भगवान है, जिसमें हर प्रकार का सौभाग्य है। और क्योंकि वह सब जगह पहुँचता है, इसलिए वह कृपालु है। यहाँ जो शब्द आया है, शिव, उसका अर्थ है कृपालु और मंगलमय।
किसी नगर की बिजली के बारे में सोचिए। एक ही धारा एक रसोई का बल्ब जलाती है, पड़ोस के घर में छत का पंखा घुमाती है, और गली के आगे एक केतली गरम करती है। हर यंत्र अलग दिखता है और अपने-आप काम करता है, फिर भी हर एक के भीतर वही शक्ति चलती है। ग्रंथ एक ही उपस्थिति को इसी तरह देखता है: हर मुख के रूप में दिखती हुई, हर हृदय के भीतर चुपचाप चलती हुई।
