The Light That Steers the Mind

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.12

Meaning · English

The Person is the great lord. He sets the mind moving toward this clearest of attainments. He is the one who rules, a light that never wears away.

The one who fills everything is also the one in charge. He is called a great lord, and given a specific task: he sets the mind going, the clear and settled part of a person, and turns it toward the cleanest goal there is. He governs and is not governed. He is also light, and that light does not wear down or go out. Asked what starts things moving, the seer answers with a someone, not a something.

Sunlight through a bedroom window in the morning gets a sleeper up. It does not push or shout; it shines, and the person stirs, opens their eyes, and starts the day. The sun is not used up by waking a thousand houses. So with this Person: he rouses the mind toward clarity and loses nothing doing it.
