The Thumb-Sized Self
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.13
Meaning · English
The inner Self, a person the size of a thumb, always lives in people's hearts. Heart, insight and mind take hold of it. Those who know it become deathless.
The vast being described so far is also small and close. As the self within, it sits in the heart of every person. The text gives it the size of a thumb, which makes it a definite, findable presence rather than something spread too thin to locate. It is reached through three things working together: feeling, clear understanding, and ordinary thought. The result named is specific. Those who come to know it are no longer subject to death.
A city's power grid runs across hundreds of miles of wire, yet in a kitchen it shows up as a small socket in the wall, within arm's reach. The current that lights the whole city is right there. The thumb-sized self works the same way: the all-pervading being, met at one small, near point inside each person.
