Ten Fingers Past the World

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.14

Meaning · English

This Being has thousands of heads, thousands of eyes, thousands of feet. It covers the earth from every side, and still reaches ten finger-widths beyond it.

A thousand is not a count here. It means more than anyone could number. Every head, every eye and every foot that exists belongs to one Being, so all the seeing and walking done anywhere is its seeing and walking. The second line sets a limit on the picture. This Being covers the earth on every side, yet the earth does not hold all of it. Ten finger-widths beyond is a small, bodily measure for a large claim: the world is completely filled by it and still is not the whole of it.

Picture a tablecloth thrown over a kitchen table. It touches every corner and every edge, and no part of the wood shows. Yet the cloth still hangs a hand's width past the rim on all four sides. The table is the earth. The cloth is the Being that covers it completely and still has more left over.
