What Was and What Will Be
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.15
Meaning · English
All of this is the Person alone: whatever has been and whatever is still to come. He rules over deathlessness, and over everything that lives and grows on food.
The Person is the one presence the seer has been describing, and the claim is plain: everything is him. Past and future are both inside him, so he is not one more thing that time carries along. He also rules over two very different realms. One is deathlessness. The other is the ordinary life of bodies that grow by eating and then wear out. What dies and what never dies answer to the same one.
A reel of film sits on the projector. The frames already shown and the frames still waiting are wound on the same spool, all present at once, though the audience sees them one by one. The Person is like the whole reel: what we meet as before and after is, for him, held together in one piece.
