Every Hand, Every Ear

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.16

Meaning · English

Its hands and feet reach in every direction; eyes, heads and mouths turn every way. Its ears are open across creation, and it stands enclosing everything.

The 'it' is the one reality the chapter has been describing. It does not have a single body somewhere. Every hand that works, every foot that walks, every eye that looks and every mouth that speaks belongs to it, because all of them are its own. It also hears everything. The last line widens the picture: it does not sit inside the world like an object in a box. It stands around everything, covering it on all sides.

Picture a large orchestra. Dozens of hands bow, pluck and strike; dozens of eyes follow the score. Yet one piece of music is being played, and it fills the hall around every listener. The many hands are like every body at work in the world; the one music is the single reality acting through them and surrounding everyone.
