The Friend Who Shelters

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.17

Meaning · English

It shines through the workings of every sense, yet has no senses of its own. It is master and ruler of all, the refuge of all, the friend of all.

Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling: each seems to belong to it, because it shows itself through them. Yet it owns no eye, no ear, no skin. The same reality that has no organs is also in charge of everything, master and ruler. And it is not only above things. It is the place all things turn to for shelter, and it is a friend, someone on our side. The power that rules everything and the warmth that befriends belong to one reality.

A house wired for power: the lamp glows, the fan turns, the radio plays. Each seems to have its own gift, but the current in the walls has no bulb, no blade, no speaker. It works through every appliance while owning none, the way this reality acts through the senses without having any.
