The Swan in the Body
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.18
Meaning · English
Dwelling in the city of nine gates, the swan within the body flickers outward, yet it rules the whole world, all that stands still and all that moves.
The body is pictured as a walled town with nine openings: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, and the two openings for waste. Living inside is the swan, an old name for the self, a bird that can fly free. It seems restless, slipping out through those openings toward sights and sounds. Yet that same dweller is the one in control of everything, the rooted things like trees and hills and the moving things like animals and people.
An air-traffic controller sits in a tower ringed with windows. Her eyes keep darting out through the glass. Yet every plane answers to her, parked or in flight. The tower is the body, her glancing eyes are the self moving out through the senses, and the planes are everything that stands still or moves.
