Seeing Without Eyes

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.19

Meaning · English

Handless, footless, it runs and grasps. Eyeless, it sees; earless, it hears. It knows all that is known, yet no one knows it. It is called the first, great Person.

We move with feet, take with hands, see with eyes. The reality the seer describes does all of this with no organs at all. Its seeing and hearing do not depend on a body. Then comes a turn. It knows everything that can be known, but nothing and no one knows it in return. So the seers give it a name instead of a description: the first Person, the great one, there before anything else.

Your eye takes in the whole room: the cup, the window, the face across the table. But it cannot turn around and look at itself. Without a mirror, the one thing it never sees is the eye doing the seeing. That is the place this reality holds. It stands behind every act of knowing, so it never appears in front of one.
